Essay On Earthquakes

790 Words2 Pages

Earthquakes are sudden, violent shakings in the ground that is caused by the movement of the Earth’s crust or volcanoes. More than 10,000 earthquakes take place every year, most of them not recognized by humans. Earthquakes do not occur at random locations, however, as some people believe. A pattern can be seen where most earthquakes occur at or near the plate boundaries. In fact, these earthquakes are what help scientists discover where these plate boundaries are. Plate boundaries are the cracks between the set of tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s crust. The moving of these tectonic plates is what causes these earthquakes. There are three types of plate boundaries: divergent boundaries, convergent boundaries, and transform boundaries. A divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic …show more content…

It shows the three different types of plate boundaries. Comparing both the world map and the Interpretive Map of Plate Tectonics, a pattern can be seen. There is a correlation between the magnitude of the earthquakes and the type of plate boundary it’s located on. It is seen that earthquakes with more magnitude more located on convergent boundaries, while the weaker earthquakes are located at divergent boundaries. Also, there is a correlation between the depth and plate boundary the earthquake is located on. Earthquakes with more depth are located on convergent boundaries are shallower, while earthquakes located on divergent boundaries are shallower are located on transform boundaries. In conclusion, if the plate boundary is convergent, then the earthquake has more magnitude and depth. If the plate boundary is divergent or transform, then the earthquakes are weaker and shallower. Additional research that could prove and disprove this hypothesis at the same time would be a collection of more data of earthquakes over the history of
