The Effect of Diesel Exhaust on a Person’s Health Air pollution has been one of the greatest concerns this millennial. The majority of the focus regarding air pollution has been on its effects on the environment and how it contributes to climate change. It can be easy to overlook the effect it has on the human body. In Resitoglu’s article that was written about his research study it says, “The World Health Organization estimated that around 2.4 million people die every year due to air pollution” (16). Out of the many different sources of air pollution, diesel exhaust is one of the most devastating pollutants to the human body. Health effects from diesel exhaust is mainly related to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems with the central airway being the most affected. Diesel exhaust can lead to the development of specific diseases that can have a lasting impact on a person. Barath’s article says, “…Recent studies have also suggested a role for pollutants in the development of both asthma and COPD” (1). Asthma and COPD are both diseases of the central airway. They are chronic conditions that affect individuals for a lifetime. Diesel exhaust does the more damage to the respiratory system of children than it does to adults. Oehha’s article says, “Because children’s lungs and respiratory systems are still developing, they are also more susceptible than healthy adults to fine particles”. When children’s bodies are still developing, the environment around them has a larger impact on them.
