INTRODUCTION: Communication is a vital part of everyday life. With lack of communication, simple everyday tasks have to potential to become great burdens. With a wide range of communication channels, the information can be sent down the wrong path, misunderstood, not responded to in a timely manner, sent to the wrong department, or not received at all. This report focuses in on technology’s impact, lack of employee adaptation, and the low level of soft skills in the workplace. The consequences of making a poor decision affect efficiency, timeliness, and how effective the message is. CAUSES OF COMPLICATIONS TECHNOLOGY: Technology has allowed for great advances in communication. The ease of communicating with executives across the globe has been simplified by pushing a few simple buttons. The addition of channels such as video conferencing, smart/mobile devices, podcasts, and telephones have also helped reshape how the workplace operates. With the additional channels added, the problems arise (Guffey, 2011). As a result of the variety of communication channels available, the message can be sent in an inappropriate fashion, overlooked, and there can be too much faith put into the machine. In recent years, there has been a noticeable spike in the use of social media. Social media is a perfectly acceptable channel when communicating with friends and family in a nonprofessional manner. Using social media in an attempt to communicate in the workplace is seen as immature and unprofessional. Also, internet hackers can spam an account, launch viruses, or employees can post negative comments on the web pages (Daniel, 2012). CONSEQUNCES: Along with causing confusion and miscommunication, messages that are sent down the wrong channel are the source of delays in time, poor reflection on the company/department, and ineffective messages. With time sensitive information, it is essential to know the appropriate method of communication. Knowing what is appropriate, be it email, making a phone call, or delivering the information face-to-face can make all the difference. Information is very situational, so knowing the appropriate method to choose is important. If it is a negative statement, such as letting an individual go, then the method should be able to portray emotions that cannot be misconstrued. Relating news that will negatively impact the receiver should be delivered in a richer channel. Media richness is used to help reduce the ambiguity of the message (Newberry).
