Breaking a social norm The social norm we will attempt to violate would be talking loudly, singing and dancing in public places. The social norm acts as an mechanism of social control because when the norm is being broken within a group of people they would most likely show a specific reaction and response to the behavior that we would be demonstrating. If we go into public places to talk loudly then people would respond a specific way as in look at us weirdly, ignore us, make rude comments, laugh at us, or pull out their phones and record what we’re doing. The sanction we believe that we will receive would be an informal sanction because while we break the norm we won’t be doing anything that is really serious and won’t offend anyone. the reactions we can receive from people could be negative or positive but it all depends on the specific group of people that we encounter. Then when we went to Walmart so that we can break our norm but this time Lauryn was singing very loud and dancing as Kalen was getting people's attention by being very loud. As people were walking by some people stopped and started to laugh and other people just ignored what we were doing. At taylor park nobody really paid attention to lauryn as she was singing and dancing they just ignored her with the exception of one person. At each location we tried to do something differently to make people pay attention to us we danced funny, talked loudly and even sung loudly off
