Breaking Social Norms

Being somebody who would rather blend into a crowd than be the center of attention, social norms are something I try to strictly adhere to, whether it is something as simple as personal hygiene, wearing clothes, not speaking over a professor in class, eating with utensils, or abiding by the law. Of course, from time to time, I break norms unintentionally. Never, however, have I set out on a mission strictly for the purpose of defying a norm until now. For my violation, I decided to go out into a public setting and briefly interact with random strangers. To achieve this, I decided to say hello to random unsuspecting persons while keeping eye contact as they passed by me, observing their reactions and behaviors. Each time I went to speak, I was overwhelmed with the possibility that I would get a negative response. After about 10 minutes of participating in this behavior, however, I realized that I was getting a handful of relatively the same reactions. People would either unenthusiastically say hello back, not say anything but smile, completely ignore me, or do a double take, looking around with a confused face to see if I was talking to somebody else. These reactions did not surprise me, because if I was in their shoes, I am sure I would have responded the same way. Starting at a young age, many of us are taught by our parents or other adult figures in our lives, not to talk to strangers because it could be dangerous. If life was a game, and we were the pieces, norms would be the instructions that come with the game, keeping everything running smoothly. Norms provide stability in a society by uniting people with a shared, general understanding of the rules and expectations one should follow. Individuals can be very different, but share a common set of norms. The norms people follow may vary depending on which country, community, or even household they live in. Norms and values go hand in hand. For example, the values of the Mormon religion result in a norm of followers covering one’s shoulders and dressing modest. A norm that I think should change is the objectification of men and women in the media. As we have discussed in class, people are becoming desensitized to these over sexualized types of advertising because they appear so frequently in magazines, commercials, and even places like billboards where they are almost impossible to avoid.
