The Life Of Dr. Ben Carson Ben Carson was a small boy who had little self-esteem. He struggled in school, and definitely wasnt the coolest person to be around as child but when no one else was there for him, books were. Reading is what lead to his success, and when it did he began to gain self confidence. With the help of his mother, and some of his teachers, he grew up to be one of the most influential people. Benjamin Solomon Carson was born on September 18, 1951, to the parents of Sonya and Robert Solomon Carson. When he was a young child, his parents divorced, leaving Sonya to raise Ben and his older brother Curtis. His mother, only having a third grade education, pushed Ben and his brother to strive and be the best that they could. His family was poor, causing his mother to work three jobs to provide for her boys. Carson says his mother is the reason for his hard work ethics.
