The Great Franklin D. Roosevelt Nicholas DeGristina SUNY Canton Leadership Profile April 27th, 2014 Throughout the history of the United States there has been extraordinary individuals both in business and government that have demonstrated their abilities to be affective leaders among the people in which they are in charge of. There are many definitions of what a leader is and what characteristics a leader should have. One man that demonstrates all aspects of a leader and that has been deemed on the list of one of the greatest presidents who has ever served respectfully belongs to Franklin D. Roosevelt. On January 30th, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York a boy named Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born. He was son of James and Sara Roosevelt. From a young age his family had given him the education he needed to make for the next step in entering a private school called Groton, which was located in Massachusetts. It was then at Groton where he had listened to a speech by one of his distant cousins Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin had looked up to him and was very influential in his political career. At Groton Franklin was not a standout student nor was he an athlete. Although that did not stop him from attending Harvard University in 1900. During his time at Harvard he devoted much of his time to his social life and universities activities. He even was determined to become president of the campus newspaper. By 1903, Franklin had graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in History from Harvard University in only three years. His next step was attending Columbia University in New York City, where he would study law. He never ended up finishing and getting his degree, instead he took and passed the bar examination and for the next th... ... middle of paper ... ...nd his wife hardly had time to spend together. A quote that stands out is the quote that he made at his first inaugural Address on March 4th, 1933 where he said, “ The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” He gave hope and a sense of pride to the American people that everything was going to be alright even in a time such as the Great Depression and with the future uncertain. It takes a great leader to accomplish what Franklin D. Roosevelt had accomplished and not every president that is put in the same situation can achieve the success that he has accomplished, even with a disability that might feel limiting. It is not easy being a leader with everyone looking up too you and expecting you to know every move. Being a great leader is taking what you are dealt with and turning it into greatness and Franklin D. Roosevelt is an exceptional example of a leader.
