Coughing, sneezing, runny noses allergies are not a fun thing for a person to have. Many people have allergies, but not a lot of people truly know what an allergy is and how they work. Allergies are a reaction from the body caused by certain substances. These reactions can trigger symptoms that come in different levels of severity. No matter age, body type, or gender anybody can have an allergy. “As many as 30% of U.S. adults and 40% of children”(“What Is an Allergic Reaction?”) have allergies. I fortunately don’t have any medical conditions, but I do have allergies and have always wondered what they really were. No matter what age a person has the ability contain some sort of allergy. Many times people develop allergies or more noticeable allergies with age. So why are some people allergic to some things while others are not? The answer is all in genetics. It’s honestly quite simple; some people’s genes contain allergies while some don’t. Often times these allergies are passed down from generation to generation. “If your parents have allergies you probably will as well” (“Who Gets Allergies?”). An example would be with my mom and me. She is allergic to lots of animal hair, bringing symptoms like sneezing, watering eyes, scratchy throat, and headaches. I also become fatigued around lots of animal hair, however I am not nearly as affected by animals than my mom is. Hopefully the symptoms don’t become more harsh as I become older. I also am allergic to the medication, penicillin. When I take penicillin I breakout with hives. The interesting thing is that neither of my parents are affected by the medicine. Many reactions to foods are really intolerance (reaction of the metabolism due to a chemical deficiency) rather than allergy (reaction of the immune system). Many infant allergies, which are later outgrown, are thought to be the result of immature immune systems. The other causative agents can be insects, food, latex, hair dye, etc(Lloyd & Sisman,2013). The most common trigger to stimulate anaphylaxis among children are food products such as peanuts, dairy, seafood etc. Exposure to any of these allergens can result in severe anaphylactic attack within 20 minutes.(Australian Resuscitation council, 2012).However the doctors discuss the history of symptoms occurring in children suffering with peanut allergy before declaring them to be anaphylactic and prescribing medication. (Unknown, 2014). Symptoms of anaphylaxis may occur in varied forms depending upon the severty of the reaction. For instance in mild cases swelling of lips, eyes or face occurs along with hives, rash, tingling of mouth and vomitting accompanied with abdominal pain.
