Today I will be discussing about an African American activist a minister a civil rights leader whom has made many contributions to the African American culture Rev. Al Sharpton. Who was born Alfred Charles Sharpton, Jr. Al Sharpton was born in Brooklyn, NY to his father Alfred Sharpton Sr. and his mother Ada Richards when his family moved he was then raised in Queens, NY. In 1954 He soon began to start developing a speaking style as a child he then started preached his first sermon at the age of four called, “Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled” at Washington Temple Church of God with an audience of over 800 people. Soon after that he then toured with gospel singer Mahalia Jackson who took interested in his unique speaking skills. At the age of 7 Al Sharpton first heard of the struggles with racial issues through the stories that his grandfather would tell him of how he was beaten by white men for simply standing in there way and not walking on the other side of the street.

Upon discovering this from his grandfather Al Sharpton decided to better himself so he could fight injustice not just for his grandfather but for the African community. Al Sharpton was an ongoing church person, Sharpton showed so much interest in preaching teaching and helping others that at the age of 10 he sought out to be a minister and then became an ordained minister in his church in New York. As Al Sharpton grew so did his hunger for knowledge and for equality for his fellow African race. In the late 1960s, Sharpton decided to become an activist and to join the civil rights movement by committing himself to joining the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

In a much more recent story Sharpton was involved in the Trayvon Martin case where a young African American teenage had been Murder by George Zimmerman in the state of Florida where Mr. Zimmerman had been a part of a neighborhood watch in 2012 where many fellow Americans felt it was a racial profiling case. Mr. Zimmerman beat the case due to the fact of the gun law in Florida which a lot of people to this day deem unfair. One of the things that Sharpton is working on now is because of how Mr. Martin was killed in the state of Florida because of the gun law Mr. Sharpton as well as other have decided to protest that law and have it removed from the state of Florida Inclusion Rev. Al Sharpton has been about standing up for what is right and fair even at a young age and continues to seek equality for all African Americans.
