Today I will be discussing about an African American activist a minister a civil rights leader whom has made many contributions to the African American culture Rev. Al Sharpton. Who was born Alfred Charles Sharpton, Jr. Al Sharpton was born in Brooklyn, NY to his father Alfred Sharpton Sr. and his mother Ada Richards when his family moved he was then raised in Queens, NY. In 1954 He soon began to start developing a speaking style as a child he then started preached his first sermon at the age of four called, “Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled” at Washington Temple Church of God with an audience of over 800 people. Soon after that he then toured with gospel singer Mahalia Jackson who took interested in his unique speaking skills. At the age of 7 Al Sharpton first heard of the struggles with racial issues through the stories that his grandfather would tell him of how he was beaten by white men for simply standing in there way and not walking on the other side of the street.
Upon discovering this from his grandfather Al Sharpton decided to better himself so he could fight injustice not just for his grandfather but for the African community. Al Sharpton was an ongoing church person, Sharpton showed so much interest in preaching teaching and helping others that at the age of 10 he sought out to be a minister and then became an ordained minister in his church in New York. As Al Sharpton grew so did his hunger for knowledge and for equality for his fellow African race. In the late 1960s, Sharpton decided to become an activist and to join the civil rights movement by committing himself to joining the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

In a much more recent story Sharpton was involved in the Trayvon Martin case where a young African American teenage had been Murder by George Zimmerman in the state of Florida where Mr. Zimmerman had been a part of a neighborhood watch in 2012 where many fellow Americans felt it was a racial profiling case. Mr. Zimmerman beat the case due to the fact of the gun law in Florida which a lot of people to this day deem unfair. One of the things that Sharpton is working on now is because of how Mr. Martin was killed in the state of Florida because of the gun law Mr. Sharpton as well as other have decided to protest that law and have it removed from the state of Florida Inclusion Rev. Al Sharpton has been about standing up for what is right and fair even at a young age and continues to seek equality for all African Americans.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born at noon on January 15, 1929 in Memphis, Tennessee to the Reverend Martin Luther King and Alberta Williams King. Martin Luther King Jr. spent the first twelve years in the Auburn Avenue home that his parents shared with his maternal grandparents, the Reverend Adam Daniel Williams and Jennie Celeste Williams. Martin Luther King, Jr., born on January 15, 1929, was well known for his nonviolent movement to bring justice and to an end to the segregation of the people in the United States back in the 1950s. With King being the leader of a peaceful protest, it failed to bring equally to the colored people. Martin Luther King, Jr. was labeled as an “outsider” who was “hatred and violence” and that his actions were “unwise and untimely” from the Public Statement by Eight Alabama Clergymen (clergymen). In response, on the day of April 16, 1963, he wrote the Letter from Birmingham Jail to declare and defense his movement was not “unwise and untimely” at all. Dr. King is a man who is over flowed of nothing but creditability. Not once he pointed his finger as a child would and blame the Caucasian men for forcing the African-American to attempt to survive a horrific ordeal of history. He encouraged his brother and sisters of color not to protests with bitter and physical violence but to engage hands and peacefully demand to be treated equally. I agree with his statements towards the differences between just and unjust laws. A just law is one that abides by the law of God and the moral law. An example of this is when the majority party puts a law into place and are willing to follow that law along with the minority. On contrary, an unjust law is not put into place for the sake of the majority and the minority. An unjust law seems unfair to the group that is least likely to be represented. Recently, I came across an article titled “The Truth of ‘Black Lives Matter’”, written by The Editorial Board. The article was published on September 3, 2015, to the New York Times. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country.
