STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Thinking of the path that led me to Public Health, I always wonder when people talk of disparities between different populations receiving health care, if they truly understand what that means. What situations poverty and illiteracy can create? Some of us are lucky to be born in an urban settings to an educated family which gave us the luxury of proper health care but large parts of the developing world remains plagued by preventable or treatable infectious diseases, poor maternal and child health, worsened by illiteracy, malnutrition and poverty.
The seed of serving people has been instilled in me during my early teens, raised by an uncle for couple of years who was a doctor, I was able to notice how much difference he was able to make in his community. Naturally, I developed a passion for science. So I chose to complete my bachelors of medicine and science from Soochow University in China. My undergraduate education exposed me to a multitude of courses which allowed me to obtain a breadth of knowledge and skills relating to medicine but any amount of learning would be incomplete without hands on experience. The one year internship experience in first affiliated hospital of Suzhou provided a stimulating environment through rotational postings in different departments, this gave me an opportunity to interact with diverse group of patients helping me understand the influence of economic and cultural differences on health.

My interest in public health makes SJSU a natural choice for graduate study. The research interests of the reputed faculty members will enable me to keep in touch with the latest developments in these fields. I strongly believe San Jose state university with its distinctive stamp in public health will set me on the path to contribute significantly to the ongoing research while the cultural diversity creates a nurturing environment to enhance my future. The excellent facilities offered by your department will provide an environment conducive to successful graduate work. I am confident that I possess the motivation, intellectual ability, preparation to succeed in a demanding graduate program and meeting the lofty standards of your department.

In addition, research is another fundamental necessary in ensuring human health quality for individuals. I admire the researchers who commit in finding answers to fight against chronic diseases occurring worldwide. I have significantly respect the researchers who work together in discovering new diseases and treatments affecting individuals globally and not only fulfilling one country’s needs. It is my desire to become one of those researchers in the next ten years contributing in global health and decreasing global health inequalities in order to provide health care equality for every human being living in the world. We need to work together, globally, and collaborate in order to end health inequalities and the pursuit of human equality in the sake of social justice.
“Malnutrition, neonatal diseases, diarrhoea and pneumonia are the major causes of death. Poor rural states are particularly affected by a dearth of health resources.”(doc V) Those who live in rural areas are unable to receive proper health care because of the lack of health resources. This is a sign of discrimination because the rural states are particularly affected, compared to wealthy states are less affected by the illnesses which torment the poor, yet they are still the ones that receive the most help. The government is not building enough health resources and those that are built are not put in the poor rural areas. The poor are denied health care and hospitals simply because they are poor. And without hospitals to cure the sick and impoverished, they fall deeper into poverty. “Life in an Indian slum was never easy, but for Hiraman Ram, a migrant construction worker, it has recently become a lot harder. 5 months ago, the father-of-three was hospitalised with an intestinal infection, and had to cover the expensive treatment from his own pocket. He has since been unable to work, and the family has been pushed deeper into poverty. "We now survive on borrowed money and other people's goodwill",” Hiraman Ram’s sickness caused his family to go further into poverty. The South contributed to the emergence of public health strategy in the United States by demonstrating the need for non-passive government presence in times of economic and social hardship. The South was able to have implement public health strategies during the Civil War, but their destitute state after the war proved difficult in maintaining successful public health strategies.
An individual who is born into poverty is bounded by poor living conditions, inequitable supplies, and stressed out family members. Those who are poverty stricken have limited health access and education. As results of poor schooling, individuals are less educated and receive lower skilled jobs, which are lesser paying. I grew up in India, where access to food healthcare was very rare. However, my family and I were very fortunate to have many Doctors in our family. This was the only reason why I was able to get good doctors for monthly checkups, and vaccinations as a kid. There were also shortage of pharmacies, however I personally never had to experience any hardship. That does not mean others had the same. Many people were not as fortunate as I was. People who were poor or lower caste had no proper medications or healthcare. They did not have regular health checkups or proper funds to have three meals a day. ...forming bench research at Barry University and Weill Cornell Medical College in the Traveler’s Research Fellowship, I have been exposed to the side of medicine where scientists work every day to find cures for diseases and save lives. Experiencing different aspects of medicine has made me a more competent individual to thrive in this field and has deepened my interest and passion to pursue medicine as a career.I believe that those who fight with so little against so much truly need others to help them in their struggle. Being a physician is not only becoming a successful professional. I will work hard to bring about necessary changes to end social disparities, so that more groups in society receive the best healthcare. By making a difference in their lives, I will receive rewarding experiences that are worth all the hard work and sacrifice my chosen career requires.
People have focused on improving health and prolonging lifespan of people since the ancient times. Before the development of systems for health care such as NHS and CDC, people used home remedies and it was not as effective. WHO defines health as “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” as adopted at the International Health Conference 19461. Ashton, John et al (1991) states that The Public Health Act 1848 was passed by the government, in response to the urging of Edwin Chadwick, an English social reformer. This was supported by reports, from local branches of the Health of Towns Association (formed in 1844), of poor and insanitary conditions in many UK cities2. Winslow (1920) defined Public Health as “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting human health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals3.” The Alma Ata Conference of 1978 reaffirmed the critical role of public health in attaining health for all, with particular emphasis placed on the centrality of equity, community participation and intersectoral collaboration4. Education is neither linear nor static. It requires evolution and fluctuations. I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at UNC Charlotte, and now it is time for a prime conversion to be made. Attending the Masters of Public Health program at UNC Charlotte would open the door for me to pursue my career aspirations in health care. Specifically, I am interested in epidemiological methods in community health. My ambition, perseverance, and work ethic have brought me to a high point, and enrolling in the Masters in Public Health program would raise that threshold even higher.
One of the biggest issues an economically challenged community faces is adequate healthcare for the members within the community. All over the country, impoverished communities have become filthier which leads to the spread of diseases and sickness but the people in the community and the community itself does not have the money to pay for healthcare clinics or provide doctors for those who are ill. These clinics can also provide jobs and opportunities for many of the members in the community while providing the members with a place they can go for their medical needs. Even small things such as vaccinations, shots, medicines, are needed within communities but economically challenged communities can not afford to have these basic healthcare tools.
Historically, the nursing profession has been actively involved in the health promotion and disease prevention among the general public. However, while caring for others, nurses often neglect their personal safety, which ultimately results in the high level of work-related injuries. Failure to timely address risk factors for nursing can have dire consequences for patient outcomes, since it is often associated with increased medication errors and patient falls, poor quality of care, and permanent disability of the nursing staff (Stokowski, 2014).
To begin with, we have to identify what exactly means for the words “public health”. In general, we usually divided into two different areas. Public health which refers to the health of the environment surrounding in public, such as public transport and public infrastructure. Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.
Even though I initially started my journey in public health after graduating from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, I acknowledged my interest and enthusiasm when I was working on my research thesis during the final year of my college. I conducted a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching program to control hypertension among adults residing in selected rural areas of Bangalore in India. It happened to be my first exposure to the field of public health where I had an opportunity to interact with Bangalore’s slum-dwellers and witness their lifestyle, their access to the basic needs such as water, sanitation, and essential nutrients which raised a serious concern on my mind. Upon completion of the research,
