The first theme I wrote was a message I received while reading both of the stories (more so from “The Yellow Wallpaper”) as well as an in-class discussion. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, its mentions several times that the narrator had just given birth; we also discussed in class that she had postpartum depression. The narrator, along with Mrs. Mallard from “The Story of an Hour” were both recently married and not only having to deal with their roles as a woman, but also as a wife ,and in one case, a mother. There yearning for freedom, to go out into the world outside, might be a metaphor for how society placed a burden on the shoulders of women to be trophy wives and remain home and care for the house and the children.
