In the short stories, “The Story of an Hour” (1894), by Kate Chopin and “A Rose for Emily” (1930), by William Faulkner, the protagonists live in a culture expecting women to be happily married. “The Story of an Hour” is about Mrs. Louise Mallard, a young woman that has to be carefully told about the death of her husband, Brentley, because of her heart condition. When she is told of the news, she locks herself in her room and will not come out. Eventually, when she exits the room, she sees her dead husband standing at the front door and dies of a heart attack. One article believes they put this ironic ending in because, “Physically, her heart was weak, and emotionally, it had no room for anyone else.” (Berkov 248). Louise Mallard was basically house ridden because her husband was always away. In that time, women were not supposed to do things on their own without the permission of their husbands. She did not ever try rebel against these standards so it made her miserable. Emily Grierson had the main man in her life, her father, die slowly. After his passing, she withdrew from the town social life and became isolated from the town. Although they had this characteristic in common, they did were still different. Mrs. Mallard still interacted with her family members and a few neighbors, but still is not as social as the common young woman in this time. When her husband died is when she isolated herself. “The Story of an Hour” states, “...she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her” (Chopin). Miss Emily completely shut herself off from the outside world. The only person that went into her house for decades was her negro servant. In “A Rose for Emily”, it states, “After her father’s death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at an” (Faulkner 2).
