The transition from high school to college is exciting experience as well as challenging for students. Almost everyone goes through such a transition between two diverse interesting worlds. Many students enter in college with the expectation of having the same experience as they had while at the high school. Although high schools and colleges are similar with each other in multiple ways, they are dissimilar in many other areas. These students make wrong assumption about college, and they quickly realize that how different college environment is compared to high school. College costs money, presents academic challenges, and offers more social opportunities than high school for students. One of the difference between high school and college is the cost. College is more expensive than high school because students not only have to pay for their tuition fees, but also have to pay for their textbooks, living expenses, supplies, and transportation. College students have benefits of being able to join variety of sports teams like basketball, football, soccer, etc. College also provides athletic facilities for students, such as gyms, pools, and dancing rooms. In contrast, most high school offers sports but very few high school offers athletic facilities similar to college. College also host social events which are not available in high schools. Students love to enjoy these social events like orientation week. College also offers more clubs to provide academic opportunities for students. There will be club provided to students for any field they are interested in. While in high schools, the variety of clubs will be limited for students. Students do not get much opportunities as college in high school. Social events, athletic facilities, and clubs show college environment much social and interesting than high school
Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.
Throughout this course, topics such as the transition from high school to college, learning skills, self-discovery, and career exploration have been discussed. Conversations occurred concerning the challenges and benefits of private and public colleges as well as the transition from high school to college. We also talked about our strengths and weaknesses while studying. Finally we talked about the jobs that we wanted, and the jobs we would be good at. During the rest of this paper, I will go into more detail about the topics we discussed; and go more in detail with what I learned.
Students entering college for the first time become concerned with their college life. The students are on their own once they enter college. There are no parents or guardians telling them when to do homework, when to go to bed, or how to eat healthy. These students are now responsible for how they are going to succeed in school and meet their own needs. From the beginning, these students wonder what their experience is going to be like and are they going to handle the demands of college?
As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. This creates a belief in many young students that college actually is a commodity, something they must have in order to have a good life. High school and college differ in a variety of different ways that separate the two in a significant manner. High school is designed to prepare the student for college and on the other hand college is designed to prepare the student for reality. I’ve personally been enrolled in high school and college institutions, therefore I have experienced the reality of both. Many high school scholars enroll in college thinking that they’ll have nearly the same responsibilities and expectations in which they had to exceed in high school, which is very untrue. College is difficult and isn’t a push over like high school, so put forth your best effort. After my first few months of college, I realized I enjoy being a college student much more than I enjoyed being a high school student. However, the transition between the two extremely diverse worlds, was challenging at first, I found out how to overcome it. If you're in high school the most common question you ask yourself is “will i go to college? and is it really worth it ?” My answer is yes, this is why,college usually pays of in the long run, What I mean is that in average a person that goes to college gets a better pay. If you are planning on graduating with a degree that involves STEM ( science technology engineering and mathematics) there will be 4 jobs available for those graduates while on the other hand a high school graduate will have 4 persons competing for the same job including themselves. Society puts too much pressure on high school students to attend a 4-year college right after graduation. Though this is an attainable goal for some, a great majority of students are not fully prepared for the demands of college. 4-year schools require an incredible amount of maturity and preparation, leaving very little room for mistakes. Schools often overlook this aspect because their main goal is to get as many students into 4-year college as possible. This is a great goal to have however they send students off to college who aren’t ready to be handle the difficult of their courses while being away from home. College life is a journey taken by many high school graduate in effort to explore a higher form of education, and most importantly build a new life outside the boundaries of their families to sustain a long path of toward successful career and to some, building a new family of their own. In the United State we are blessed with an education system that is never available worldwide. Laws are placed to allow every students regardless of ethnicity, gender or class a chance to pursue education in among the most prestigious universities in the world such as Ivy League school as well as many large public universities with many programs. This vast number of education institutions available of every type of students create this big diversity leading the U.S. to be the frontrunner of education in the world.
Students who make the transition from high school into college have difficulty adjusting because many are not used to being on their own nor their new environment. Entering college, you come to understand that it is not the same as high school. There are crucial differences like the level of academic responsibilities, time management and scheduling, as well as the method of learning. College and high school are different in many ways but they both ultimately share the same goal in teaching students to learn.
High school and college are different in many ways. It is true to say that college is more expensive than high school. Of course, it provides a higher level of education, but that expensive fees make it hard for those that come from low income families. At college you also have to buy books where in high school you borrow them from the school. Paying for education can get expensive, but some people pay even more than imaginable. Some cities do not have colleges, so students that want a higher education have to move away to another city where they can get a higher education. This often involves paying for an apartment, food and transportation. However, the cost is not the only thing to consider when comparing high school to college. As college provides a higher level of education, the amount of homework increases. At high school, where it is more of a general education, the time spent at home doing homework is a lot less. This does not mean that in high school, there is no work; it just means that it is a lot easier in some sense. At college you can also choose from subjects related to your field of study if you desired. There are also some differences between the social environment of students at high school and students at college. Since college students have more work to do at home, they have a limit on the time they can spend outside of school.
Most students are introduced to a whole new world when coming to college. For many, it is the first time they are on their own. College is a very different culture than high school. It takes time for most students to get acclimated to the college lifestyle. During a college student’s years at college they will partake in situations they never dealt with before. Most have never been to parties that last till about 4am with all the alcohol they can drink. A lot are also not used to having to share a bedroom with one or more persons, the heavy work load in the classrooms, and for some actually paying school tuition. The day to day college life is different for majority of first time college students.
Is a College Education Worth It? There are many people who believe that once a student graduates from high school, they are going to attend college for a higher and better education. But there are also people that have stated their opinion that a college education is not worth the amount of money needed, just to earn a piece a paper.
In high school most teachers will let you turn in your homework late if you give them an excuse such as, "I forgot it at home" or "It's in my locker." In college if you give your professor one of these excuses they will say, "Too bad." There are also a lot more tests in high school. Usually, there is a test every week or two. Although there are more tests, the work is not as hard. Most of the time you will read aloud in class or go over every point of the homework so that there is no question of what you have to do.
Schooling is a very important aspect in our lives and one must go through many steps to gain a higher education. Two of these steps are high school and college. Although high school and college students aim for the same goal, which is acquiring an education and graduating, the demands, expectations, and social atmosphere extremely contrast.
