Schooling is a very important aspect in our lives and one must go through many steps to gain a higher education. Two of these steps are high school and college. Although high school and college students aim for the same goal, which is acquiring an education and graduating, the demands, expectations, and social atmosphere extremely contrast.
There are many demands placed upon high school students. For example, high school students are obligated, or rather forced by law to attend school until the age of eighteen and they are required to do and turn in their homework. Even if you fail a class, students are required to take that class over until they pass; students have no choice, they must do the work or go to summer school. They are required to be a full time student, which means they have to take the necessary classes each semester, which usually consists of six to eight classes. However, there are few demands in college. The number one demand in college is that a student must pay their tuition on time. College students possess the right to decide if they want to show up for class or not. They can fail a class and not make it up and they do not have to turn in their homework if they do not feel like it. There is no law stating that a college student must attend class, be a full time student, turn in homework and pass each class. To a college student, the demand of attaining a higher education or graduating is completely up to that person.
Expectations are another difference between high school and college. Students are expected by society to graduate from high school, therefore stripping the need for knowledge and replacing it with a need for a diploma. In high school, one is expected to show up on time and is punished if they do not. Some high schools have a room called sweep, or something of that matter, for students that are unable to make it on time and are forced to sit in a chair and stare at a wall. Nevertheless, college expectations are not as strict. In college, students are not expected to graduate, but instead are projected to educate and better themselves with or without a diploma. The reward is a career, and doing what they desire in life.

Many students take their high school years for granted and do not always pull off the best grades. But then when they get to college, or a higher degree of education than high school they start to straighten up. The reason being is because after high school everyone can choose what it is they want to spend the rest of their life doing. The classes they take, are of interest to them rather than all of the required ones in high school. For this reason I feel that students are more likely to take college seriously and not just because of the money.
High school and college differ in a variety of different ways that separate the two in a significant manner. High school is designed to prepare the student for college and on the other hand college is designed to prepare the student for reality. In today 's society, there are multitudes of pressure high school students face. One of the biggest pressures put on high school students is the decision of going to college. From the moment students enter into a secondary education, they are constantly asked questions about their future plans. Teachers and parents expect students to perform their best, while giving them no chance but to look towards college. In some cases, however, college might not be the answer. Other options exist as alternate avenues after high school, however, these are not as often expressed as the idea of a four year university. High schools are by far more built for students,scheduled and disciplined. The students are often times are forced to go so they are very opposed to school. The schedule is the same each day and the student is expected to have excellent attendance and faces disciplinary action if attendance protocol is not met. College is a very different story, the approach of colleges towards structure and attendance is much more relaxed. You can not go to class and it will be up to you on what you start to lack on. If you fall behind in a class because you have poor attendance they consider it unfortunate and expect the student to find a way to catch up on work. The teachers will not force you to join the class as a matter of fact they don’t care at all. The students may have a different schedule for each day of the week and they are expected to be able to handle their day to day work accordingly. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. In high school, the teacher pretty much babysits the students. The teacher always has to get on their students to pay attention in class, to do their work, and to stay awake during the lecture. Also high school teachers don’t really expect their students to read ahead in their textbooks. In college the professors are very different. College professors expect the best from their students, because they know that their students are spending a very large sum of money in their education. The professors expect their students to read their textbooks before class, and to do their homework. They also expect their students to stay awake during the lecture, if not they will kick the student out. College professors don’t care if a student doesn’t turn in their homework or if they forget to read a chapter in their textbook. College professors are not worried about this because it’s not their grade, they already have their degree. Also, college professors won’t accept any late work. They also are very strict on absences and most college professors will rarely give any extra credit to replace a student’s absences. This is my first semester in college and it its completely different than high school in many ways in my opinion. There are many similarities, and differences betweeen high school and college. High School was the best four years of my life. I got in alot of trouble in thoses years, but also had a blast. Now at J.C.C. it is even better than high school, and my eyes are being opened to a whole new world. In Toronto High School you can get away with just about anything. Jefferson Community College is a whole different story. High school begins at eight o'clock, and ends around three. You go to the same seven or eight classes every day. You also see the same people you have grown up with since you were little. You have football season, school dances, after school activities, clubs, boys, plays, and a ton of homework. Also sitting through assemblies, dress codes,and who could forget getting sent to the office for misbehaving.College is a whole new step. You go away to an environment all new to you. You have to leave your friends, and set out to make new relationships to last a lifetime. It is an emotional step alot of kids are not ready for. Obviously, there is a major difference in the level of academic responsibilities between high school and college. In terms of expectations and responsibilities placed upon you in high school, they are more of a guideline and carefree, whereas college it is more complex and is individually based. What I mean by this is that in high school you can count on parents and your teacher in order to guide you in setting priorities and remind you of your responsibilities. It was part of your parents’ and teachers’ responsibility to make sure that you succeed in high school. Students have fewer duties to worry about, and fewer requirements where they could depend on others for help. A college education opens the door to gain knowledge that high school does not give you. In college students obtain the knowledge of how to become more independent. For example, the students learn to choose their own class schedule, extracurricular activities, and how to organize your time.
In college you have greater responsibility. You are an adult, and they expect you to act like one. The teachers expect you to except the consequences if you do not do the required work. In high school the teacher would probably call your parents, and let them know that you aren't doing what you are supposed to do.
