Emerson And Thoreau: Examples Of Transcendentalism

Influenced mainly by the writings of Emerson and Thoreau, transcendentalism was the movement that emphasized relationships between man and nature that told people to look beyond the physical and transcend into the spiritual. Although the belief does encourage a lifestyle of non materialism and living simply, the core faiths of relying on yourself and nature are not correspondent with biblical teachings.
An example of a transcendentalist belief is relying solely on yourself and not others is strongly presented in the transcendental lifestyle. In an excerpt from the text “Self-Reliance,” it is quoted, “Trust thyself.” (Emerson, 270) This quote supports the idea of only relying upon yourself, and not on others and God. However in the Transcendentalist belief you can get such guidance from being exposed to nature. In an excerpt from the text “Nature,” it is quoted that, “Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.” (Emerson, 269)This teaches that the divinity of Nature is what is sought to relieve grief or to celebrate joy. But in comparison, when the Bible states, “In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:10, KJV.) This verse demonstrates that nature is not divine, but rather God’s gift to the human race. Emerson and Thoreau however, point to the belief that people are naturally good. In a quote from Emerson, it is stated that, “We are born believing. A man bears beliefs as a tree bears apples.” (Emerson) This quote argues that no matter what path is chosen, humans will always produce goodness, and are incapable of amounting to anything else. In Romans 7:18 however, this idea is incongruent. “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing:…” The verse argues that there is nothing good in humankind, and the only thing that can interfere with this is God himself as a saving grace. Once again, this shows how transcendentalism is not in line with the Bible’s teachings and
