Elizabeth Arden When you think of Elizabeth Arden, what comes to mind? Perfume? Makeup? Skincare? When I think of Elizabeth Arden, I think of all those things. When I wear her cosmetics, I think, “Wow, my makeup is on point today.” With that thought, I feel like I could take over the world, and that is the kind of confidence that Elizabeth Arden brings to my mind. This is the kind of confidence that Miss Arden wanted to bring every woman everywhere and she established that by being uncompromising in her vision to create the newest and absolute best products, packaging, and services that women not only needed, but desired. Arden opened the first modern beauty salon in 1910 with her partner, Elizabeth Hubbard. Instead of a parlor, the establishment was referred to as a salon to appeal to higher class society women. Arden stockpiled on raw materials in advance, and offset the loss of income from overseas salons by focusing on growing her domestic market. At the peak of the war, business at Elizabeth Arden’s was booming. A line of clothing was added in the 1950s, and Arden become the first industry to be directed at male customers by marketing men’s fragrances and opening a “men’s boutique.”
In business or at play, Arden was all business. Like the real entrepreneur she was, she knew just what she wanted and usually got it. Never losing the outward appearance of the woman who lived for beauty and refinement, she held her own in a competitive industry. Elizabeth Arden continued her reign as the leading lady of the cosmetics industry until her death in 1966. Through it all, Miss Arden created both an empire and a new industry.
