Professionalism can be defined in several ways depending on who is defining it and the environment it is being applied to. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, professionalism is defined as the skill, good judgement, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well. In regards to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor I believe these elements are key to achieving success. The most important components of acting as a professional and achieving success to me are: motivation, resilience, teamwork, people skills, high quality work, and self-development. In the mental health field it takes several people to diagnose, treat, and help clients. In this field the professionals must find a way to use each other’s strengths and compliment each other’s weaknesses. At a young age I learned what teamwork really meant by growing up in a big family. We always had to do chores together and work together to accomplish tasks. As I got older I applied my teamwork to the field as I led my high school varsity Field Hockey team to the Group Finals as a captain. I learned that using people’s strengths can make a much better impact than just one person’s strength. I plan to carry that teamwork over to my education and work experience in becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. Throughout my college career I have displayed my high quality work through papers, group projects, presentations, and internships while completing my Associates Degree with a 3.85 grade point average and my Bachelor’s Degree with a 3.94 grade point average. I’ve learned how important it is to take pride in your work and to only submit work you’re 100 percent confident in. Being a Licensed Professional Counselor consists of submitting paperwork and being confident in your observations of the clients. I think my previous educational institutions have taught me how to be a professional through hard work and I believe that LaSalle will continue to help me perfect the art of high quality work in the mental health
