Is Exposure to Pornography Related to Increased Rates of Rape? Rape culture is a culture in which sexual violence against both women and men is portrayed and rationalized in the media. It becomes the most prevalent through the language used among individuals, objectification of women, and the normalcy of sexually violent acts. In order to properly assess the link between exposure to pornography and increased rates of sexual rape, it is prudent to first understand the culture behind sexual violence and what contributes to it. The way women and sex are represented in the media is a huge part in the development of rape culture. She mentions that based on the definition of “causation” pornography clearly does not cause rape, but she argues that it still has an effect on the rates by a term multiple causation (Russell, 2013). This is a very interesting side to the argument and should be taken into consideration. There is no valid evidence to claim that without a doubt people who watch pornography will end up raping someone at some point in their life. There are plenty of other factors that contribute to sexual violence. What pornography does do, is perpetrates the continuation of rape culture. While it doesn’t force anyone or directly cause any individuals to commit such invasive crimes, it certainly contributes to the factors. Its influence on rape culture is not always obvious but can certainly be argued that it is prominent. While some individuals might be levelheaded and able minded enough to understand that porn is unrealistic and only portrays certain scenarios, others might take it more seriously. It gives off the impression that women are just sex toys and should comply with the sexual desires of men. It could also be a gateway for people who already have predisposed thoughts about either young girls or children, allowing them to feel that the fantasies in their head and on the screen have the potential to play out in real life.
