The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) prides themselves in being a well-trained and diverse police agency. The core values that make Edmonton Police great are; respect, integrity, innovation, accountably and community. By offering these core values, this agency heads into the direction of becoming a leader in policing across Canada, as well as making Edmonton the safest major city in the country. The mission statement that guides the EPS vision is “To increase public safety through excellence in the prevention, intervention and suppression of crime and disorder” (Edmonton Police Service, 2016). In order to achieve the idea of excellence, this agency has high expectations in its employees to maintain and carry its core values. The level of discipline …show more content…
In order for the Edmonton Police Service to meet the needs of the community, they need to align themselves with the overall mission and vison of the municipality. The combined vision for these two entities is for Edmonton to become the safest major city in Canada, and to welcome individuals into a diverse and beautiful community. The city of Edmonton is also respectively innovative, keeping up to date on new technologies, city development and adapting to new cultures. Innovation is one of the core values that The Edmonton Police Service offers. When a city is constantly evolving and becoming more diverse, policing services need to change as well. Innovation is about transformation and moving forward with the times. In the perspective of a city, transformation would mean becoming more modern and elegant in order to appeal to visitors and locals. For Edmonton police, innovation is “Pursuing excellence and creativity” (Edmonton Police Service, 2016). This policing agency expects to come across as an outstandingly professional and creative service. As communities change, public safety services need to adapt to different styles of policing and relate to different individuals. I believe that by being creative, EPS aspires to find common ground with every citizen, but most importantly to develop that sense of empathy and respect for everyone. If there weren’t any differences between these two entities, they would essentially be the same service. There needs to be a balance of priorities and visions between the municipality and its public safety agencies. The city of Edmonton prioritizes themselves in being able to welcome individuals to “one of the most special places on earth” (City of Edmonton, 2016). They do this by sharing their goals and milestones such as; their urban design, transportation services, career opportunities and many other services and attractions. However,
The commitment to progress, exist in the changing environment. They seek opportunities for changes leading to improved police services.
Policing is a very difficult, complex and dynamic field of endeavor that is always evolves as hard lessons teach us what we need to know about what works and what don’t work. There are three different Era’s in America’s policing: The Political Era, The Reform Era, and The Community Problem Solving Era. A lot has changed in the way that policing works over the years in the United States.
The mission of EPS is to keep all Edmontonian safe from crime and disorder through excellent prevention and intervention methods. For both organizations to succeed in the vision, mission and values, it is very important for these two organizations to have alignment regarding their mission, visions, and values. Development can only occur in a safe and secure
Community activists and some local politicians have called for the practice of carding to end however various police services and their police chiefs feels that completely banning carding is not the answer to problems the community has with carding (Cole, 2015). Despite the disapproval by the public, carding is beneficial for police services in Ontario to be able to use the carding practice however it must be regulated by the province to ensure it is done correctly without any racial or prejudice biases because carding can be considered a form of proactive policing which is something all police officers must do to ensure good police work, it’s not just used to collect data and information of individuals but it also allows officers to interact with the members of the community and find out what are the issues in the community, and the sole purpose of carding is for the police to use the information obtained as a useful investigative resource and to collect intelligence on criminal activity and public safety

Community oriented policing involves many different ideas, all of which are aimed at uniting a police agency with the citizens it serves. The common goal
The City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Police Service both have and operate under a specific set of values, as well as a mission statement and vision for their community/company. Despite both being in the same geographical area, there are definitely some differences in how they operate, and what they view as important. To start with the City of Edmonton (furthermore referred to as Edmonton), they have a vision of being a leader in green energy, health care, and advanced technologies (2018). They also take pride in the fact that they are a city of many different cultures, educations, political and social differences, and yet all the people in Edmonton have a shared vision of the city. Edmonton also boasts having a city of high quality design.
Community oriented policing has been around for over 30 years, and promotes and supports organizational strategies to address the causes, and reduce the fear of crime and social disorder through problem solving tactics. The way community policing works is it requires the police and citizens to work together to increase safety for the public. Each community policing program is different depending on the needs of the community. There have been five consistent key elements of an effective community oriented policing program: Adopting community service as the overarching philosophy of the organization, making an institutional commitment to community policing that is internalized throughout the command structure, emphasizing geographically decentralized models of policing that stress services tailored to the needs of individual communities rather than a one-size-fits-all approach for the entire jurisdiction, empowering citizens to act in partnership with the police on issues of crime and more broadly defined social problems, for example, quality-of-life issues, and using problem-oriented or problem-solving approaches involving police personnel working with community members. Community oriented policing has improved the public’s perception of the police in a huge way. Community policing builds more relationships with the
The changes in police culture have found some errors in managing this changes. Drawing on Kotters article, 50% of the companies failed in this error, by not establishing a great sense of urgency for changes which means that they are not setting right expectation, right goals and visions for the company which has the potential to jeopardise the future of the organisation. “Without motivation, people won’t help and the effort goes nowhere.” (Kotter 2007). As for the New Zealand Police they want urgent actions for changing the culture and to improve performance wit...
Community policing allows officers to be actively involved on the streets alongside the community. Their focus is not only to solve crimes but to interact with the people in their neighborhood, establish a rapport with them. This initiative has gained popularity within recent years as the police and leaders of the community pursue more significant ways to promote public safety and to enrich the quality of life of their community members. The police and the citizens often come in contact with each other for a multitude of reasons other than criminal purposes. Police officers often engage in community service by providing an abundance of information for those in need, and they offer educational services at schools and outreach
For my interview I attended a ride along with the Goodyear Police Department with Officer Bengt Erickson and we patrolled the streets of Goodyear Arizona for the better part of my whole Friday night. Some of the things that I learned while attending this ride along and asking Officer Erickson questions are that most of the Phoenix area police department’s computer systems do not actually talk or sync up with each other to provide better coverage and information sharing. There is a for profit company called Cop Link that department’s across Phoenix can pay a monthly amount and join that allows for better information sharing but Goodyear PD does not pay to use this system. To me especially after analyzing community policing policies this seems like it is counterproductive and I feel like in a city as large as Phoenix that information sharing between department’s would be an invaluable resource. I also learned that the city of Goodyear is broken down into 3 different districts of patrol and they do not use the term beat anymore. The most interesting fact from conversation was that the officers of Goodyear PD are allotted money and allowed to buy their own firearms with only restrictions on the weapon having to be a Glock and of the .40 and .45 caliber and they get to keep them. Another thing that I learned is
Later on in the 1860's provincial police forces were developed such as RCMP. Further down the timeline in the emergence of the police apparatus, there are now different levels, which each have their own hierarchical organizational structure: Federal, Provincial, Municipal, and First Nations. To conclude this introduction, whether federal, provincial, municipal, the responsibility of the state apparatus is to maintain public order and safety, enforce the law and prevent, detect and investigate crime (Whetstone et al., 2017). In the evolution of the police and policing tactics, ways in which policing was conducted in society has changed overtime. There are so many different styles of policing.
Public safety covers a wide variety of people and organizations, but carries one common theme and that is, the public’s safety. This course has broadened my knowledge on the many roles that make the public safety sector go around and the role the public plays in it as well. My thoughts before the course were close minded and to the point. I quickly realized that policing is not as cut and dry as I once portrayed it to be. Society is always changing and adapting, and it is the job of the those in public safety to adapt and change with it. The mindset that I grew up with, in rural Saskatchewan, was the police are good people and you will only need to deal with them if you break the law or see someone break the law. My answers in the module 1 survey reflected my upbringing. My first thought for
In the past eight years as a police officer for the City of South Salt Lake, I have found that personal growth and achievement in my career have been based on certain past experiences. Such experiences have molded what my personality is today. I have found that in order to be triumphant in my personal and professional goals, it has been necessary for me to reflect not only on my strides, but also my mistakes.
