Donnie Darko is teen boy who comes from a good suburban family, he has with a history of violence, and anger issues. He differs from his family immensely and seems to be a bit of a rebel. In the movie Donnie Darko (2001) the writer and director of the story is Richard Kelly. He adds dark humor, time travel, and a six-foot-tall rabbit, who speaks to Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) through haunting visions. The film isn’t classified by one specific genre as it shows a likeness to a variety of themes, for example, the story follows the theme of time travel which would mean that it is stereotypically classed as sci-fi, however a love interest is introduced in the film which causes there to be a relationship into the mix of genres, also, the story has a strong relation to religion and the question comes up “is God real?”. Grandma Death tells Donnie that “everything living ultimately dies alone” Donnie then believes life may have no meaning. This gets Donnie thinking about what the true meaning of life is and if there is a God then why would he let the bad happen to us?

So, it begins that Frank starts to appear to Donnie in another one of his sleepwalks and lures him into breaking the water main in his private high school with an ax, flooding the entire school. Donnie then embeds the ax in the statue of their school mascot and spray-paints the words "they made me do it" on the sidewalk. After this happens the Principal cancels all classes giving Donnie the opportunity to walk Gretchen home.
