As a child, the history of the world always fascinated me. Whether it was as far back to the first civilizations, or even the more modern events of the last century, I loved it. It was not until I was trying to decide what major I would follow that I realized just how much I wanted to be a part of the historical process. The reason that I believe that history matters is because it is a tool of understanding. While some people believe the false statement, “If left unchecked history will repeat itself,” there can be similar patterns to what happened in the past. It is important to learn from the mistakes and successes of the past to help in our understanding of today’s problems. It even influences our lives when we are not even thinking about
“How can we live without our lives? How will we know it’s us without our past? “ I agree with John Steinbeck, I believe that the past matters. We can look back to our past and recognize our mistakes and the errors in our thought process to make progress and to avoid making similar mistakes in the future. We should always look at our history to realize and appreciate how far we have come as human beings. The past matters to me because it defines who we are today. I believe that everyone should be aware of their own history and also the heritage of their land. Too many people have sacrificed their lives for people to be ignorant of history.
History has always been one of my passions. Entering high school, my goal was to get a 5 on one of the AP tests for history. When the opportunity came, I took my first AP class, AP European History, and I studied away.
Becoming a business expert or a doctor was what my parents wished for me from an early age. My father constantly emphasized the importance of these professions in that besides being financially rewarding, they are prestigious. However, little did they know that my interests were in a different field. I became extremely interested in world history during my elementary and high school education. Among the events that fascinated me in the study of world history include the colonization of African states, slavery, and Trans-Atlantic Trade. I would always pose questions to my teacher to elaborate on areas that were not clear to me. Indeed, I had an insatiable curiosity for knowledge about global happenings especially those that took place in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Unknown to me, this curiosity is what would lay the foundation for my interest in my intended major: International Relations.
One reason that history is valuable is because we can create a better present from studying the past. Understanding the mistakes of common people in the past is very crucial to success in the future. Examples from history do not have to be 100 or 1000 years in the past, they can be as little as 5 years or less. The Wars of The Roses was an unstable time in England’s history. Royalty changed hands multiple times in bloody
By learning about the reasons and results of what took place in history, people can learn better ways to understand the past controversies among nations and individuals. if we understand the achievements and disappointments of the past, we may, if possible, be able to learn from our errors and avoid repeating them in the future. To paraphrase Edward Burke “The more we study history, the wiser we become. Doomed are those who can't interpret history well.”. Sato, S. (2014).
World History is a subject area taught in many schools throughout the country. It is a subject that many students enjoy participating in and learning. Despite this, World History is difficult to put into a curriculum and is generally taught in much lesser quality when compared to United States History being taught in that same curriculum; moreover, World History is never given the proper time it deserves when placed under state standards that detract from its teaching and its quality. World History planning and periodization are difficult and controversial because schools tend to emphasize United States History more in curriculum, there is a lack of time for instructors to teach it under Common Core Standards, and there are two distinct philosophies
George Santayana, a Spanish philosopher once said “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” This quote is the reason why history is such an important subject for schools not only in the United States, but throughout the world. Although most students take what is in their history books as fact, the reality is that sometimes history books are not one hundred percent reliable. That is why it is so important for us to understand what happens behind the scenes of what goes into our history books. For history to be accurately retold, historians need to gather all available information possible and are counted upon to fill in the blanks of their source material.
The knowledge of history can indirectly help common people to improve the quality of life. In my home country, Japan, the knowledge of history is required when getting a job. The job applicants have to take the job examination, and it often includes lots of questions about history although the job itself may not related to history. Therefore, the knowledge of history provides Japanese people better chance to obtain a high-paid job, leading to the better quality of life. Therefore, although the knowledge is not really applied to the world, it can still be quite
Many students wonder why the study of history is so important in today’s curriculums. A simple answer to that is, one cannot proceed without knowledge of the past, or to say that one learns from others mistakes as well as their own. This being true, another reason to study history is to see, not only our mistakes so we may learn, but also to see the good influences that molded the world and culture we live in. The ancient civilizations of the Greeks, Hebrews and Romans contributed to our modern civilization, not just the eastern-European but western civilization as well. Those cultures and civilizations shaped eastern-European culture which intern shaped our western culture, so for us to truly study our cultural history we must revert back to the values and ideals of these first civilizations. Our modern western culture is intellectual with a strong central government and mostly monotheistic in religion. How did we come to be like this? How can we learn about those ancient cultures? By their literature mostly. The literature of a culture directly reflects the society in which it is written. By analyzation of ancient poems, stories, myths, and folklore we can decipher the basis of many cultures.
In conclusion history is a critical part of human culture and schools all around the world. History is a critical part of human life and humans cannot just turn their backs on centuries of past experiences. History can help humans solve our current problems, help people understand others and societies, and history provides cultural identity to many different groups. Humans cannot just pretend that the past did not happen. The past sets up the future and this is why humans cannot turn their backs on history.
History is a window to the past. I believe History is the most important subject, the most relevant. I have a burning desire to broaden and deepen my understanding of the past.
Have you ever wondered why schools teach history? History is a subject that educates students about past events. Usually, history is a mandatory subject you take in elementary school, middle school, and optional during high school. Many students usually ponder to themselves, why do I have to learn history? The main reasons history is essential, because it helps us develop judgment in global issues by understanding past behavior of people and societies, it assists us in making appropriate decisions, it helps us form vital skills necessary for good citizenship, and it inspires us.
“What is so important about history? Why do we study it? History does not matter, the present is the most important time.” These statements are common among people in this day in age.We view history as obsolete and in the past. There really is no reason to invest in studying something we have already been through right? Well this is not true and I plan to break this stereotype and show why knowing our history and past can help in many areas of our lives and for the the advancement of our race and human beings.
It is important to study history because it teaches us about not only our own culture but about cultures all around the world.
