Jermaine Cole, a 21st-century artist, once said in his song G.O.M.D., “History repeats itself and that's just how it goes.” He proceeds by drawing a parallel between Elvis taking over Rock and Roll, which was mainly sung by only African Americans at the time, and white artist such as Eminem taking over rap, which is also mainly sung by African Americans. Cole is no historian, but even he understands the value of history. Throughout our lives, we have constantly been forced to learn history. Although history is constantly taught to people all around the world, the reason for it is rarely ever discussed. The reason it is taught should be emphasized more because if people don't understand why they are learning history they cannot apply it to their everyday lives. History is valuable but only to those who utilize it to learn from the past. One reason that history is valuable is because we can create a better present from studying the past. Understanding the mistakes of common people in the past is very crucial to success in the future. Examples from history do not have to be 100 or 1000 years in the past, they can be as little as 5 years or less. The Wars of The Roses was an unstable time in England’s history. It is one task to learn history, but to apply it to everyday life and to the future is an entirely different task. History has no value if people do not apply it to learn from the many mistakes of the past. History will continue to repeat itself as time goes on. If people observed the past to make the decisions of the present, it might not happen so often. It is up to us to utilize history in order to secure a better future. We must not only teach history but also the value of applying it to our everyday lives.
