Do Beauty Pageants Do More Harm Than Good For Children?

The lights are all on you, the make-up, the hair, and the extravagant dresses. Your blood pumps with adrenaline; you feel nervous, yet excited. All eyes are on you; the pretty girl strutting across the stage in ostentatious costumes that flicker once caught in the light. Many people have witnessed a beauty pageant whether it is one on television or stage. Not many are in denial of the lovability of the younger aged children executing their talents in front of crowds. Beauty pageants have been around since the 1920’s setting a trend in the American society, but the history of beauty pageants began in Troy and Ancient China, where the contestants consisted of sculptors, actors, poets, philosophers and public speakers etc. (Children and Beauty Pageants) Beauty Pageants consist of many age groups ranging from newborns to about twenty years of age. Girls between the ages of three to thirteen should not participate in beauty pageants.

In many cases, such children grow up into disturbed adults who cannot adjust with the normalcy of the life around. These children also crave to be the center of hold, and when they do not get the desired attention, they start developing signs of worthlessness, depression and loneliness. In many of the cases, it takes on severe forms leading to suicide and personality disorders.

Such children may also not be able to form strong bonds of relationship and this may lead to broken families and friendships. In some of the cases, such children develop eating disorders. This not only takes their primal innocence away but also makes them likely to develop several mental and emotional imbalances in the life to come. The glitter and sheen of the glamorous ...

...o that it becomes a piece of art. Children are a creation of the almighty that are very delicate and they are said to have divine powers, so no one has the right to destroy that by distracting the little brains towards the world of fashion, glamour and beauty pageants.

Youth pageants are clearly causing children to only focus on physical appearance and not the true beauty of the child's personality. That children are now given a channel to become little Lolitas, to be portrayed as older, to almost become mini adults – these are all trends that give legitimacy to that kind of thinking."’ (Day, 2010). The phenomenon of sexual predators making child pageants unsafe has even infiltrated pop culture and has been spoken about in TV shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and in many documentaries such as America the Beautiful: Sexualizing our Youth. These young girls are put on stage and are given things like fake teeth, fake eyelashes and spray tans in order to look older, this is a thinly veiled opportunity to make children look sexy in the same way that 25 year olds looks sexy.
