The act of divorce in America has become something that is all too common, with people failing to fight for their relationships; also, young adults seem very quick to tie the knot without really knowing their partner as well as they should. A main concern with divorce is the affect it will have on their children, as well as their future relationships. Many studies show that children who come from a divorced relationship are far more likely to have failed relationships of their own. This is simply due to how the parents bring along the divorce, as well as how they go about their lives after it. The rate of failed relationships held by children with divorced parents can greatly be reduced. Divorce can be destructive to a child’s sense of trust as well as commitment. While some children know about the arguments, others are surprised by the separation and have a harder time adapting to the change. Many kids go their whole life having to go back and forth between parents, and many children have to listen to their parents talk badly of the other. This started as a prediction that was thought up almost forty years ago, in 1984. Today, this is more or less an everyday occurrence; not every divorce is the same. Yet society tends to lean towards stereotypes of divorce, when it comes to the children and how they should be acting because of the divorce.
Over the past decades, the patterns of family structure have changed dramatically in the United States. The typical nuclear family, two married parents with children living together in one household, is no longer the structure of the majority of the families today. The percentage of single-parent families, step-families and adopted families has increased significantly over the years. The nuclear family is a thing of the past. In America today, one of our main life goals is to marry the person we fall in love with, live happily ever after, and skip gleefully away to live the American dream. In most cases, after marriage then comes children which starts a family. This has been a part of human nature since the beginning. Marriage and family are the backbone of our culture. Families need each other for support, dependence, learning, love, encouragement, and ultimately survival. Parents are the ones that supply these needs, meanwhile supplying their own needs by depending on each other for love and support. Only the two of them can give this support because of what they are to each other, husband and wife. When two people get married, they are obviously in love and feel that they want to spend the rest of their lives with each other. They make the ultimate commitment to love one another and one another only, forsaking all others til death do they part.

Many families in the United States are separated or divorced. My family is a part of the divorce statistics. My mother and father divorced in 2001. I was four years old and my brother was two. My brother and I have to deal with the packing and the repacking of the bags every week. There was plenty of personal and social reasons behind the divorce. Some personal reasons were lack of commitment, too much arguing, marrying too young, and having kids at a young age. My parents got married at the age of 18. My mother had me at the age of 19, and she had my brother at the age of 21. That put a strain on their marriage, and that caused my parents to argue all the time. As we have come closer to the end of the millennium, it is been easier to obtain an escape from a broken marriage. There have been many laws concerning divorce enforced in the United States that allow a quicker processing time. These laws, often referred to as “no-fault';, grant a divorce to a couple even if only one spouse applies for it. Marriages can be dissolved easily and for little or no reason. In my opinion, divorce was uncommon prior to the 1980’s because it was frowned upon by society, I believe religion played a large roll as well as financial reasons. The 1980’s brought about a new charge for women's right’s, as more women entered higher paying jobs they were no longer dependant on a man for survival. As a society, I believe we are now realizing the ramifications of divorce on families, children and communities. I feel in more recent years marriage has been taken less seriously, and there is a feeling of “if it doesn’t work, I’ll just leave”.
