Diversity and Inclusion Statement I have long been committed to diversity, and recognize the barriers faced by women and other minorities in engaging in everyday life and graduate studies. I born in country of challenges: the challenge to born as a second female while your families wait for a male to complete their happiness; challenge to be born in patriarchal society when gender remained a barrier to power for women; as gendered stereotypes undermined and devalued women’s leadership abilities; the challenge to be born in country that codifies the law of equality and justice, but still value man more than woman; the challenge of learning when I dreamt of being a lawyer; however, my family rejected the idea of studying somewhere far away from them. I just studied any major offered at the nearest university. I was available to the student needs, particularly to support them when they needed a voice to press for their needs and wants. Greg Lewis in “An Open Letter to Diversity’s Victims” advocates against the need for many languages in school programs, in American. Greg describes that those who are after what they refer to as “diversity” have been insisting that the American schools should be taught both in English and Spanish. The so called liberals base their arguments on the fact that, teaching a single language would obsolete the cultural identity of the Hispanic people. Greg’s arguments, use of quotations, tone, and mood show the need as to why single language system should be continued.
When people hear the word 'diversity', they often think in terms of black and white. I believe the true meaning of diversity is not simply about skin color, economic background or the face value of any other characteristic, rather it is the increased knowledge and sensitivity gained from unique experiences. The strength of diversity then comes from having many points of view and trying to reconcile them by finding common truths or resolving differences amongst people. Being a person of mixed heritage, my father is black and my mother is white, has definitely affected my life and contributed to the development of qualities that enhance my ability to embrace the uniqueness of those around me. Being raised in a single parent household and the values passed on to me by my mother have also been strong influences in my life. My greatest contribution to my community is the ability to create relationships between people of diverse backgrounds and a desire to understand others' beliefs.
I feel that placing the responsibility for diversity initiatives within the Human Resources department will limit the overall effectiveness of the initiatives for the simple reason that Human Resources is only a small part of the total organization. When an organization really wants to make changes and have someone or something succeed it will be embraced from the top down. Human Resources in some organizations does little more than recommend new hires to the people who will do the actual hiring. Growing up in a lower middle class immigrant family, where neither one of my parents finished high school, it did not take long for me to realize that I was different and that I would have to work much harder than the rest of my friends who came from wealthy and educated families to reach the same goal. I learned at a very young age that things will never be simply handed to me; if I want something done, then I need to work with great determination in order to reach my goal. Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. This course of women and gender studies, as would all courses, have produced awareness by coherently explaining the situations women are facing in the world today. One may not know of theses situations until taught. By learning of these occurrences, one can properly act upon them. Many women and men have taken the opportunity to attend classes on women’s and gender studies and have since then made strides to make a difference in the unjust society that must be faced.
Diversity is most often interpreted as the presence of various races or ethnic groups in a given environment. It is not often that diversity is associated and interpreted in relation to the presence of different age ranges within an environment. Every day of my life I encounter new challenges that illustrate just how important diversity in relation to age is and just how much I am able to contribute and raise awareness for this largely unrecognized group of excluded. I am a senior in highschool, I am also 14 years old. I take college level courses, and I am 14 years old. I play a significant leadership and service role in my community and my school, and I am only 14 years old. Because I am so young and I exist as such a vital part of my community I can offer an aspect of diversity to a college community that, for the most part, is unheard of.
Although the gap between men and women’s employment is shrinking, there are many barriers that women and visible minorities must endure while seeking employment. The white male presently dominates many aspects of the work force which creates difficulty for women to obtain jobs typical males possess. It can be substantiated that being a woman can drastically decrease one’s chances of receiving a personal job of choice when examining women’s challenges, education and trades and sciences.
