Diversity is the state of being different, the difference of race, sex, religion, culture and age etc. A diverse workforce is made up of people with different demographic backgrounds that work within an organization. It is important for the hierarchies of management of companies or organizations to understand these differences and learn how to manage it in order to run a successful organization. A successful organization or company also includes the employment practice where employers do not engage in employment activities that are prohibited by law. It is illegal for employers to discriminate against any applicant or employee on the basis of race, age, color, sex, religion, or national origin (Grimsley). “There has been an increased focus in the political and workforce arena with regard to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees”(Mondy 40). “Many companies have policies supporting LGBT employees perhaps due to legal requirements. Other firms have policies to recruit and retain qualified employees no matter their sexual orientation. Over the last decade, corporations have increasingly created a more-welcoming environment for LGBT employees” (Mondy 41). According to the Human Rights Campaign website, “With the an increasingly diverse workforce and consumer market, and the rise of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender workforce over the last decade, many employers struggle to help their established workforce adapt, and furthermore to bring new staff into the organization's culture”. Numerous employers believe having a diverse workforce is a good practice and it shows that they value corporate social responsibility.
