“We think too much about effective methods of teaching and not enough about effective methods of learning” (Carolus, n.d). Have you ever considered the term learning styles? What are they? Are they significant to us? Or why are they significant? According to Coffield, Maseley, Hall, & Ecclestone (2004), “learning styles refer to a range of competing and contested theories that aim to account for differences in individuals’ learning.” Presently, there are three main types of learning styles. Visual learning which is associated with sight. Visual learners tend to understand concepts easier when they can see the content. There are various benefits that students can gain through knowing and practicing their learning style or styles. It improves learning potential, it enhances grades, it creates a suitable learning and studying environment and it highlights their strengths and weaknesses while learning.
Furthermore, there is no specific way to learn; everyone learns via a different method. Each learning style has its own advantages and disadvantages. Hawksworth (2015) states that “A good teacher, online or in person will utilize multiple instructional strategies to meet the needs of all students, and the more you know about your learning style, the more you’ll learn”. From the three learning styles described above, I share qualities from all types. However, I mainly utilize the auditory and visual learning styles. They are my strongest because to fully understand a lecture topic, I must see, hear and be verbally participating. Being an auditory and visual learner has been beneficial to my academics. After perceiving that I am an auditory and visual learner, I started attending classes regularly to capitalize on lecture information that may not be in the notes given. At lectures, I ask many questions, I ask for examples and I even record the lectures so that I can listen to them
