Introduction A dental hygienist is also considered a health care professional. As a health care professional, it is implied in one’s duty to give the best care possible to the patient. The best knowledge in giving the patient the best care possible includes knowing the signs and symptoms of what could or may be. A dental hygienist cannot diagnose definitively, but they have the education for suspecting when something is wrong. Catching small signs and symptoms could potentially save a patient’s life. One should take it upon their own selves as a duty to notice the current condition of the patient. It is classified as an acute viral respiratory illness. Measles is sometimes referred to by the virus that causes it which is the Rubella virus. It’s most characteristic to identify by is Koplik spots. Chickenpox is also known to be a highly contagious virus with fever-like symptoms. It is common in children. An undeniable clinical feature is itchy red blisters all over the body. Chicken pox is also sometimes referred to by the name of the virus, varicella-zoster virus (VZV).

Etiology Measles is caused by an infection of the rubella virus. The virus can be contagious for approximately 4 days. The rubella virus has no reservoirs. It can only survive in a human host. It can be easily transmitted by direct contact, droplets, or aerosols. Examples for the method of transmission include the following: coughing, sneezing, or simply breathing. In some cases, it has been found where a child can receive the virus from their mother through the placenta. “Infants become susceptible to measles virus infection when passively acquired maternal antibodies is lost. Infants born to women with vaccine induced immunity become susceptible to measles at a younger age than those born to women with naturally acquired immunity.”
