Take a breath and open your mind. If I asked you “what does love mean to you?”, What comes to your mind? Well, there are multiple forms of love, and ways people perceive it. Many people learn love through how they are taught, how society sees love and, the definition of love. Love is more than just a four letter word that is overused and vaguely understood. There are many broad ways love can be defined so people can relate, but sometimes they are not clear. The Webster Dictionary defines love as “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties” or “attraction based on sexual desire”. She had also shown me how it felt to lose someone you love; it was my first family member that passed away. There was never a devastated or mad time after her passing; it's strange, but she helped me know that saying goodbye was not necessarily a bad thing. There are numerous ways of defining love and anything associated with the word. I have yet to understand what love is and believe that I never will. Is it an emotion, a feeling, or is it both? These are the kind of questions that I am sure many people out there have and constantly get a different answer. Based on the discussion in class about love and interpersonal attraction, my understanding of love it that it is something we as humans need and crave in order to get by in life. Love by definition is an emotion explored in philosophy, religion, and literature, often as either romantic love, the fraternal love of others, or the love of God based on the definition found in The Encarta Encyclopedia. As I explored the definition by means of the Internet, books, and articles I noticed the definitions changed quite a bit, but yet had the same basic understanding. The definition I found in The Encarta Encyclopedia was probably the most simple and most basic. It refers to love in the whole aspect, which is Godly, fraternal, and romantic. All in which can only be defined by one word and that it love.
Many people have different perspectives when it comes to the topic of love. The word love has been tossed around by everybody and not very many people really understand the true meaning of love. People are set to believe that love is all about the sex, affection, the happiness someone should offer, how much time they should offer us, and even the money. She has taught me to carry on when life gets hard. She lost her step-son and her husband within 4 months of each other. The doctors diagnosed her daughter with dementia only a few months after all this happened. Rather than shutting down and falling into a depression, she decided to take action. She poured herself into helping her daughter, as well as taking control of her own health. I think, overall, I learned that life can take some unexpected turns, and it is important to do what is best for oneself and those you care about. Cathy has led a fulfilling life so far, and I hope I get to spend many more years with her.
