It was a normal day of 8th grade in tech ed and then everything went south. I heard the groundbreaking word “ugly”. It was then when I realized I was who they were talking about. In that moment I felt just my heart beating but then my feet taking me out in the hall to think. I knew I could feel tears streaming down my face even though that's not something I wanted to happen. The word ugly is “very unpleasant or un -pleasing to look at” (Dictionary.com). Some other ways that people get called revolving ugly are words like hideous, horrid, and gross(thesaurus.com). It also affects people's self esteem and social appearance. Calling someone ugly is a destructive term and is a powerful word to offend someone's self appearance. Shaming

The search for one’s identity can be a constant process and battle, especially for teenagers and young adults. As one gets older, society can influence one’s view on what they should look like, how they should act, or how they should think. We also see in "Good Country People" how the characters have very distorted personalities that make Joy(Hulga) look much more beautiful. At the beginning of the story we get the understanding that Joy chooses to change her name to Hulga in order to match her outward appearance. We soon find out that it is Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Hopewell, and the boy Pointer that have the Grotesque personalities. The women are judgmental towards Hulga, and the boy is supposed to be a Christian is in fact a terrible person who robs Hulga of her leg, and her identity. In my fifteen years of life, I have been hurt by words countless times, causing me to lose my self-confidence and gain a desire to alter my appearances. My self-confidence started going downhill when I received negative comments about the size of my ears. I became fragile, vulnerable, to insults like these, thus creating challenges for my future. Later in life, I became taunted with names like “ginger” and “fat,” triggering me to long for appearance alterations. In the first year of middle school, I was called ugly by one of my peers in school.This was one of the most insulting words ever said to me at that time. Can you remember the last time you were asked to define a word aloud? Can you remember if you effortlessly gave a dictionary definition or if you stumbled to define the word in your own vernacular? More often than not, we skip concise denotations in preference for a words particular connotation and what it means to us as individuals. Although a dictionary definition surely exists, many words have meanings outside of a black-and-white block of text in which the value of a word is explained. The word shame is a prime example of these kinds of words. Defined as a feeling of humiliation or regret in response to foolish behavior, shame has a definition in which many people are familiar with. But what, exactly, is shame? Shame is much more than what ink on paper can determine for us and amounts to more than any one individual first-handedly experiences.

Our earliest memories have a way of shaping who we are; we experienced things that influence us as adults, for me this was my struggle with childhood obesity. This struggle haunted me for most of my childhood; I have always noticed how society perceived others by the way that they looked. People who were considered pretty got positive attention, while I felt ridiculed and excluded.
Shame is an important emotion that is commonly felt within a person in many different situations. It can affect one’s pride and self-esteem. It is caused by humiliation and guilt. I found that out when I was in the fifth grade. I never knew that experiencing shame could be the worst feeling ever. At the age of ten I encountered shame the most on two occasions.
I must admit, when I read the question, “What is your favorite word and why”? , I had to reflect for quite a while. So many words flashed through my mind; but one word stood out – choice. Over the course of this past year, I have had to make some very serious choices. I knew that the decisions that I had to make would impact my life forever. One choice that I made has made a huge impact on who I am today. I am mentally and physically stronger and more determined to reach my future goals; and it is all because of a choice that I made.
Envision this, the United States is undergoing a major change. Everyone has to get surgery when they are sixteen years old to make them look just like a "supermodel." The people who undergo the surgery, are called 'Pretties,' and the ones that do not, are called 'Uglies.' In the book series Uglies, I would choose to be an ugly. I would not want to look, act, and be just like the person next door. I want to be an original. If everyone looks the same, then it would be so hard to tell who is who. Also, if the government has an idea of pretty, who says it is pretty in someone else's mind? If this idea came to be, then I would be a rebel and not undergo surgery.Why would I want to look just like the person next door?
I don’t really like fish. I can’t appreciate a well designed sports car, and I certainly can’t tell a fancy glass of wine from a two dollar boxed wine. But I understand those who do: People who feel warmth spread across their body when they make a great catch, or test drive a Lamborghini, or visit a prestigious vineyard. The idea of what’s beautiful can never be universal, because one’s sense of beauty is purely individual. Beauty is the addictive feeling of being engaged in something you love. Beauty cannot be undermined or changed by another’s opinion. Beauty is the feeling of being alive because some great part of you appreciates some great part of something else.
