The founding fathers in 1776 created the Declaration of Independence to break away from British rule and gain what they called “unalienable rights”, those being life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In this document, Thomas Jefferson explains the reasons for the independence of the 13 colonies from England. The founding fathers paved the way for freedom in the United States, but this freedom wasn’t granted equally among all citizens. Woman where still treated inferior and had very few rights as citizens compared to white men of the time. Nearly 75 years later, Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sentiments to explain the reasons women should have the same rights and freedoms that men have. These injuries and usurpations for example are taxation, passing laws, messing with legislation, and military presence in the colonies. Jefferson uses the word “He” to point at the king while Elizabeth Cady Stanton uses the same word to point at all men oppressing woman. Instead of the king creating a tyranny over the states, Stanton argues that men have a tyranny over woman. She follows the declaration of independence format to prove there is gender inequality. Her examples are men taking away her rights to vote, right to education, the right to property and not being able to hold a profession. The main differences between Jefferson and Stanton are the type of freedoms they are asking for. Jefferson and the founding fathers want more of a political freedom from England and Stanton wants more of a moral or emotional freedom. Woman at the time had very little freedoms when it came to things like voting, marriage and employment. When a woman got married she was basically considered property to the man. Along with her personal freedom he also gets any property she owns and if they ever got a divorce he would get custody of the kid. The man was free to discipline his wife however he felt necessary.
