Dance
I’ve been dancing all my life. As a kid, my parents signed up for countless dancing lessons thinking I’d become a professional dancer. In freshmen year, I joined the dance team in my high school and it soon became a big part of my life. I practice five days a week after school to 7 o’clock pm and sometimes even on the Saturdays early in the morning to noon time. My life revolved around the team, therefore, I had no time outside of the team and sometimes barely time for food. Around May or April of each season, we went on competitions every Saturdays and that is when things go intense. In my junior year, we competed in the jazz category, which I learned within four weeks because I had a broken arm. There was a trick in the routine where three people had to lift me up and do a flip with a perfect landing. I competed in that routine for the first time, and the trick was not successful because there wasn’t enough practice. I did it over again at every competitions; I finally made it at State

By the time State Competition was around the corner, I knew for sure I would do a perfect landing. We got onto the dance floor, the music started playing again and once again, my mind was blank and I could not remember anything. Surprisingly, I remembered everything but muscle memories and did the routine with no problem. I made a judge smiled and other teams were very supported. It’s finally time to do the trick, I put my arms out for my team mates to lift me up, while I use my upper body strength to keep myself from falling over. I can feel my body being in the air and in slow motion, doing a flip and everyone’s eyes on me.This time, it felt like I was sky high, I did a perfect landing. Jazz dance today is presented in many different forms. Jazz history and famous jazz dancers and choreographers have helped influenced what we know today, as jazz dance. It is incorporated in an assortment of styles including, hip hop and Broadway, Jazz dance today has its own movement, while there trendy modern types of jazz, traditional jazz never goes out of style. Over the years, jazz dance has become popular in the media and can be found in music videos, television, movies, and commercials. Jazz dance is always changing with the time periods, and can be found in social dance, musical theater, dance schools, and night clubs.
The typical idea of a dancer is that they are tall, slender, full of energy, and lucky because they dance with all of the “stars”. Much of this is true, however, what many people do not think of are the many hardships that a dancer goes through in order to achieve their high status in the dance world. It takes much hard work and determination along with good direction to become a dancer. However, nothing good comes without a price. Dancers often times have many pressures put on them which can lead to physical and emotional damages. These damages occur through the pressures from the media, parents, teammates, and the stereotype that society has placed on dancers.
There are hundreds of professional dancers across the world waiting to reach their success, and out of those hundreds of dancers, I qualify in becoming one. Dance is my passion, my adrenaline, and my focus that keeps me persevering through life and its obstacles. Dancing requires a lot of dedication and hard work. “Successful dancers must have excellent balance, physical strength, and physical dexterity, so they can move their bodies without falling” (Dancers and Choreographers). If serious about dance, dancers have to have discipline in taking the time out to practice, study, and practice some more. As I nervously waited behind the curtain I hear my name get called by the announcer to go perform. “Next up is Meghana Pulimi.” As I step on the cold, shiny, ice wearing my bright yellow skater dress. Don’t fall! Remember to go in a circle twice. All those thoughts ran through my head, as I start skating to my start position. Once I get there everyone starts clapping. We had a short amount of time in each area, so we needed to use our time wisely. We ran through the routine twice and moved on to our stunts. I was really excited; I had a great stunt group and knew we would be flawless. We started the warm-ups; one, two, three times we failed - to my surprise. I didn't know if we did something wrong or we were all just nervous. We attempted it one more time, and finally it was a success. Everyone had warmed up and was patiently waiting to perform next. Once the other teams' music stopped, my heart dropped. In that exact moment, I knew we were next. Before we went on the floor, we did our favorite chant to get everyone's energy up in excitement. Our school is called and the time had come to go out there and give it our all. When we go out on the floor, everything is loud and bright. Our routine had started and we are pumped. Our team was immaculate with all the motions, smiling, yelling the cheer with excitement and walking to my first stunt. We set to do the stunt and the cheerleader goes up and I caught her foot. This dance has played a role in shaping the dance culture of different countries.
Senior recitals are a great way for exposing yourself to great composers and great musicians in our department! On Sunday, April 8th 2018 at 1:00pm, I watched Kylie Dilonardo perform her Senior Recital. This was a solo recital under Dr. Johnson’s studio, accompanied by Dr. Kazuo Murakami on piano. The rectial had repertoire from Bernhard Crusell, Camille Saint-Saëns, Gabriel Pierné, and Witold Lutosławski.
Performance Review: In The Moment After the spectacular opening night of In The Moment finished, I reflected on the performances that impacted me the most. While I will only share the impact of two dances, three particular pieces stuck out to me, and were the most memorable of the night. The opening performance of: King, and the performances of: Velvet Covered in Steel, and What You Came Here For. Each of these dances caused compelling and impacting emotions that left me wondering throughout the end of the night.
This piece choreographed by Brooke, Abby, and myself is entitled “We Are Not”. “We Are Not” makes a statement about independence and not conforming to societal norms to show the audience that you do not have to be what society expects you to be. The aesthetic of this dance is very introspective and intense. I feel very proud of the finished product that we have created, and I thoroughly enjoyed working with my classmates on this project. Our group had a great spirit of collaboration, and every group member put a great amount of effort into the dance. I am honestly astounded by what we have created. At the beginning of the semester I was unsure how I was ever going to be able to help choreograph a dance, because I had never had experience choreographing before. Performing this dance has been a very cathartic experience for me this past week and has been an amazing way for me to deal with the stress of the end of the semester. I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever we perform this dance because I know how hard we worked to create it.
Dance is an escape, a passion to some, but a language anyone can speak. Every style of dance expresses emotion through the movements, music, and connection with oneself and others. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, in the movie Top Hat, performed a foxtrot to “Cheek to Cheek.” Antonio Banderas and Katya Virshilas danced the tango in Take the Lead. The foxtrot and the tango demonstrated different levels of emotion, as well as, different levels of intensity, but they are also rather similar.

The Northern Territory is known for its culturally diverse population and some would say it is the ‘multicultural hub’ of Australia. With all of these cultures comes distinctive customs and traditions. Throughout history dance has been used to help people develop a sense of identity, the younger generations are also taught social patterns and values through the different dances. The significance of these traditional dances was to reinforce and celebrate cultural law and practices including the celebration of the passage from child to adulthood or spiritual worship. The predominantly Western culture in Australia often causes minority groups to struggle for recognition regarding their beliefs and traditions. Contemporary dance first originated from ballet, however changed when Isadora Duncan decided that she didn’t want to dance ballet. She disregarded the refined technical Classical ballet and thus the concept of Contemporary dance was born. This style incorporates movements where the body moves freely and doesn’t have restrictions, embodying raw human emotion. Pioneers of contemporary dance comprise of the internationally known Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham (The Conversation, 2014, online) + (Bibliography, 2012, online). These three dancers helped to revolutionise contemporary dance and express their interpretation of it, all unique but added layers to the genre. One of my main goals coming into this semester, especially since I took time off from ballet, was to improve upon the use of my head in dance. I know how important this is for dancers since it is often the upper body the audience members watch during a performance. I made it my mission this semester to work on my range of motion in my head and to keep pushing forward to use my head more. This year I had an epiphany that my time at Muhlenberg is coming to an end soon. I need to absorb all the opportunities to dance now because I am not sure what the future holds for me. I am now taking this new approach and I think to myself that I need to start doing it now or it will never come. This change in mindset allows me to not take a dance class for granted and really strive to better
