Cyber bullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages threatening or intimidating that person. There are many different forms of cyber bullying. Harassing someone using text messages or instant messages, threatening them is cyber bullying. Impersonating someone by; creating fake accounts, and posting rude remarks about the victim. Using embarrassing pictures of someone and posting them without his or her permission. There are many different things that are considered cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is a very cruel and malicious thing to do. The internet gives people a false sense of security, power, and people act how they usually would not. Cyber bullying may seem like nothing since there is no physical contact, but in reality it can hurt even more than the actual thing. Behind those monitors are real people with real feelings; some have been driven to depression, some have been driven to physical bullying, and some have been driven to suicide.
“Many rumors are spread about people that have never done the things being said, people usually set up rumors because they are not happy with that person or maybe even themselves” (Parks 17). Cyber bullying can be very harmful and is a very dangerous behavior to act out. Kids are killing themselves over internet post, pictures, and videos posted by numerous people on the internet. Cyber bullying is technology powered and will only get worse as technology becomes more widespread. Hopefully, this will persuade youth and parents to cut back the cyber bullying. Anyone that comes across someone getting bullied should stand up for that person and report the problem to a trusted adult. Making someone hurt for a joke is not funny and should be taking care of. Experts say that bullying begins around middle school, where children are changing to young adults. In bullying there are three people involved the bully, the victim, and the bystander. The bystander also holds responsibility when bullying occurs, because they are present but never take part because they fear the intimidator. Often targets are considered to be “different” from others, and that consists of students having specials needs, being gay, bisexual, overweight, or most importantly students who are viewed as easy prey. When bullying is attempted it can ruin a student physically and emotionally influencing the capability of a pupil to learn. It is recorded that in the United States 160,000 teenagers skip school in order to avoid bullying, and one out of ten teens quits school because of continuous tormenting. In 2014 statistics in the U.S. showed that only 20-30 percent of students who are bullied tell an adult or the authorities. In the United States of America, practically everybody can agree on the importance of the youth and their education. The youth and children of today are the future leaders of tomorrow. Although education, undoubtedly, is beneficial to America’s youth, there are some experiences, such as bullying, that negatively affect and stick with these youth for the rest of their lives. Certain children find an outlet for their frustrations through bullying others. In the past, these actions could be better controlled because they were limited to face-to-face interactions. However, due to the recent booms in technology over recent years, cell phones, social media sites, group chats, and other forms of technology have allowed bullying to expand into the Internet. This new form of abuse is known as cyber- bullying. Bullying has evolved a lot in the past few years. It used to be a big kid picking on a smaller kid, then a group of friends picking on someone, now it’s all over the internet. A lot of people, especially adults don’t think of it as a problem. The more bullying happens the less we see it and do something.
Bullying has serious short-term and long-term effects on persons physical and mental health. When it comes to bullying, there are three types of individuals. The bully, the victim, and the bully-victim. The bully is the person who is mistreating others by singling them out. The victim is the person on the receiving end of the mistreatment. The bully-victim is the person who is experiencing both ends of the equation. Many people falsely believe that bullying does not harm kids and it just a “regular” part of growing up. But it does, and there are many long-term effects that come from someone being bullied. A victim of bullying is more likely to develop psychiatric illnesses, can be diagnosed with a serious illness, are more likely to smoke cigarettes, become an alcoholic and abuse substances. They also tend to have difficulty maintaining long term relationships. Bullying is classified as intentional behavior that is harmful and that occurs repeatedly over time. It is described by an imbalance of power and it has continuos effects on whoever the victim is. Bullying can come in four different forms. The four types of bullying include: verbal, social, physical or cyber bullying. Verbal bullying includes but is not limited to, name calling and teasing. Social bullying is spreading rumors, ignoring people and leaving them out purposely, and breaking up friendships, “just because.” Physical bullying includes but is not limited to, punching, hitting, kicking or shoving someone. Cyber bullying is using the Internet, a cellphone, an iPad, or any other electronic devices as your shield in order to deliberately cause harm to others.
This sort of phenomenon makes major headlines regularly in recent times and effects a clear majority of today’s youth. State and local lawmakers have taken steps to prevent this type of bullying by making illegal under several criminal law codes. Michele Hamm, a researcher in pediatrics explained, “There were consistent associations between exposure to cyberbullying and increased likelihood of depression.” Cyberbullying became widespread among students with the rapid growth in use of cellular devices and the Internet. With this kind of technology bullies have the ability to send harmful messages to their recipients at any given time. This type of bullying is the hardest to control because it involves students but often happens off school grounds. However, because the evidence is material, students and parents could bring this evidence to the school and local police departments if a situation were to happen. Bullies appear scary but truthfully they are the unhappy ones. Majority of bullies have been bullied by parents, siblings, or other young people. Usually teens that are the bullies have a lower self-esteem than the person they’re bulling. Teens today use the internet more than anything excluding sleep. In two thousand and eight young teens ages 12-17 had access to the internet. Cyber bullying needs to stop before more of our children hurt themselves. Studies show that most likely a female would be the most bullied. A high percent of teens have been angry, frustrated, sad, embarrassed, scared and shockingly a small percent weren't even bothered.
