Every day, millions of people log in to social networking websites. Some talk to their friends and some posting things about their lives; however, one aspect that users may not recognize is the effect that social media is having on people. Websites like Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites have influenced on our lives positively, harmfully and a lot more than we assume. We all have our different reasons for enjoying social media, but we may not understand the main things they are having on our lives. Unfortunately, social media has a dark side in cyber-bullying, addiction, and sexual predators. To start with, one of the effects of social networking is cyber-bullying. As these sites turn out to be more popular, the number of people being cyber bullied in social media rises. According to Sylvia Engdahl, “In a recent survey of 500 teenagers carried out by Microsoft, more than in 10 said they had been bullied online” (p. 136). They use social networking sites to find their victims. Sexual predators don’t put their personal information such as their real name, e-mail, and birth date because they don’t want people to know who they are. Using social networking sites such as Facebook, it is usual that people will eventually end up talking to a sexual predator without even knowing. As stated in the Times of India, “When police tracked the man on Saturday, he turned out to be an online sexual predator who had been blackmailing more than 50 teenaged girls across the city for the past year…” (par. 1). Many online sexual predators have been caught on social networking sites, but eventually they will keep doing illegal things on social media.
