Chapter 1 (#1):
“Crime” and “criminality” are two terms that are one in one with each other. One of the concepts focuses on the act or actions, which would be the “crime.” The other concept focuses on behaviors and influences, which would be the “criminality” aspect. Crime can be defined as an act forbidden by law that can be punished by imprisonment, fines, or both. Crime can come in many ways from violent actions like aggravated assault and murder to less violent actions like petty theft and embezzlement. The first law is that men imitate each other since they are in close contact. Tarde believes imitation is more frequent in crowded cities where contact is close and life is active. He defines this phenomenon as fashion. In contrast, there is less imitation in places with less contact and activity, which Tarde defines as custom. The two forms of imitation take place in each society in irregular patterns. Fashion spreads a specific action, which eventually becomes a custom. However, custom is then rooted by a new fashion which eventually becomes a custom. Tarde’s second law pertains to the direction in which imitations are spread. Generally the superior is imitated by the inferior. Tarde’s third and final law is known as the law of insertion. The law of insertion is when two fashions come together; one fashion can be substituted for the other. When this situation takes place, there is an increase in the newer method and a decrease in the older method. On September 25, 2014, a Baltimore man was sentenced to 9 years for a 8-day robbery spree. 24 year old Monte Glascoe and two other co-criminals, Gary Howard and Michael Smith, robbed at least seven 7-Eleven stores in Baltimore city. Glascoe would pull out a gun and hold it at the victims, while Howard and Smith would steal merchandise and money from registers and employees. Howard and Smith have already pleaded their guilt. Here on the east coast, we have Baltimore, MD and many surrounding neighborhoods. Currently, I live just five to ten minutes away from the city in the respectable working class district. On my way to class at the University of Baltimore, I usually avoid the highway due to high traffic and drive through local and back roads. Here, I can see distinct changes occurring from how far or close I am to my home. When I get closer to the city, there is an apparent existence of poverty. Usually there are no single homes, and apartments are side by side with some potentially burned through. The city also contains more litter along the streets as well as numerous potholes and bumps on the road. There are many people who loiter in front of corner stores and side shops. Land use is different because there are less living organisms such as trees and grass. Instead, cities are filled with many buildings to provide jobs for people of society. In addition, there is a large emphasis placed on public transportation in the city. Because driving can become difficult in the city, many people choose to take public transportation. The convenience of MTA allows individuals to get to many places within the city, but it is difficult to get far from the city.
