The Outsider Essay The Outsiders is a novel of conflicts---greaser against Socs, rich against poor, the desire for violence against the desire for peace. The character Dally and Johnny affect the novel’s conflicts as greaser and as friends of Ponyboy, however they have opposite personalities and approaches. Johnny and Dally are different because Johnny likes to stay out of trouble. Dally on the other hand doesn’t mind getting in trouble. He has gone to jail and has gotten beaten up for some of the things he does, but he still continues to do things that will get him into trouble. Some similarities between the two of them are that they both care for their friends. Dally isn’t afraid to get into fights, get beaten up by other people, and he even wasn’t afraid of going to jail. Dally helps Ponyboy with things he needs to take care that are not related to school. Dally helps Ponyboy when he gets into a fight with the Socials and helps him take of things that Ponyboy can’t take care of by himself. Johnny affects Ponyboy’s life by giving him a friend that understands him more than anyone else. Dally affects Ponyboy’s life by teaching him that lifes hard. Dally shows him that life is not an easy walk. That Pony will have to make some very hard decisions that will affect him for the rest of his life. Johnny and Dally are very important to Ponyboy. If Johnny and Dally weren't in Ponyboy’s life it would be so different. He wouldn’t have a best friend who understands him. He wouldn’t have someone to help him when he is in trouble.
