“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us…” (Ephesians 5:1-2) What does it mean to be “imitators” of God? The Bible states that we can mirror God’s attributes in our own lives, and by doing so, we show love to others. In To Kill a Mockingbird and The Chosen, several key characters illustrate their Christ-like qualities in everything they do. Atticus Finch, Calpurnia, and David Malter all portray these beautiful character traits in their everyday lives.

Atticus Finch had every right to be bitter. His wife died, leaving him with two rambunctious children to raise and watch over. He had a hard job, which required most of his energy and strength. However, never once are these negative attitudes shown in his daily life. Instead, we see his loving, hardworking, patient and selfless attitude in every facet of his life. When Scout felt lonely and left out, Miss Maudie was always available, willing to set aside anything she was doing and focus on Scout’s problems. Like Christ, Miss Maudie was dependable. She never laughed at Jem and Scout for their ideas, never told them to go away, and never told them to figure out their own problems. Instead, she related to the children, deeply feeling their joys, sorrows, and frustrations. However, Miss Maudie’s most commendable attribute is her thoughtfulness. She taught the children not to value earthly things, not to tie your identity to any worldly item that could pass away. She imparted her love of God’s creation to Jem and Scout, and taught them to value it above all else.
