Comparing Frankenstein And The Future

In today’s day and age when thinking of apocalypses, one usually thinks of the end of the world in the future. However, the word apocalypse means to uncover or reveal the truth and sometimes the truth comes from the wreckage in the past. The painting “Angelus Novus” was interpreted by philosopher Walter Benjamin, who described it as an angel of history that is being blown away from a wreckage by a storm and pushed into the future where his back is turned. Benjamin ends this interpretation by informing us that “this storm is what we call progress”. Looking in the wreckage of the past and heading towards future progress, I would leave behind the thoughts of uncertainty of the future and any ideas of not wanting to progress forward. I would also bring all memories, good or bad, into the future in order to learn from mistakes and pass them down to future generations. Knowledge can be a double edge sword because with knowledge comes the ability to do good, but it can also be used to gain power and control if used in a bad way. In “Frankenstein”, Dr. Frankenstein becomes fascinated with the human frame and the principle of life and proceeds to learn and experiment about the subjects. From his studies, he is able to create and give life to a monster. Because of his knowledge, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster that tries to ruin his life by murdering his friends and family. In this case, Dr. Frankenstein did not know what he was creating at the time would be a monster, but this ability to create life could have destabilized the balance of life and death. Knowledge, when used for the wrong reasons can be proven harmful, but overall, knowledge is used for creating a better
