The two topics that I’m going to be discussing with you today are the movie named, Inception and I will also talk to you about the man known as Rene Descartes. Both the movie Inception and Descartes give off a view about how dreams work with reality and how they seem real but, they are not real at all. In the movie Inception you can go into other peoples mind a hack them by, taking the ideas that they have and then use them as your own to make money off of them. But, now a man named Cobb is hired to do a job for a very rich man named Saito. To go into his rival’s sons mind who name is Fischer, to plant an idea in his head about to break up his father’s company, so that Saito’s company would make more money. He also states that, our while lives just could be a dream that we are living in and that we are incapable of waking up from it. Cobb’s dream world is real but, it has fake memories and experiences that he had throughout his life. Descartes states that dreams are how they relate to the outside world and he also came up with the Dream Argument that, the acts of dreams provide preliminary evidence that the senses we trust to distinguish reality from illusion should not be fully trusted, therefore any state that is dependent on our senses should at the very least be carefully examined and put through many test to determine whether it’s in fact reality. Basically, while people dream they don’t know that they are dreaming, so while this is happening they don’t know if they are actual awake in reality or are they in the dream world having a lucid dream which the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming. Just how Descartes says, “that everything we experienced in a dream we have already experienced in real life”. So back to the movie when Cobb gets the job from Saito, then Saito tells him that if he does the job correctly he will help him and get the charges dropped against him for his wife’s murder. So then Cobb forms a crew to go into Fischer’s mind to plant the idea, when they meet up with Fischer, they are on a plane that is headed to Los Angeles and they are locked in a cabinet with Fischer. In the movie when Cobb starts to believe that everything that is happing to him is, coming true he starts to think there could be a reason he his having these thoughts and that there may be a main point behind his wife’s suicide. Because, they are in a dream realm/world everything to them actually seems real even though they know it’s not true. Because, before they even entered the dream realm they were told that everything they hear and see would not be real, it would be a figment of their imaginations. Basically is everything that has happened in Inception just a dream within a dream because, at the end if the movie Cobb, is reunited with his family but, when he returns home dreidel that he has always kept with him is still spinning and it doesn’t stop. So you have to wonder if Cobb is still in dream realm limbo and if his wife is actually alive next to him. Or that Cobb is actually still in a dream like state, that he doesn’t care about waking up, all he cares about is getting back home to his family. So when he walks away from the dreidel that is still spinning, now you start to realize that Cobb has accepted his fate and the reality he is in if its real or not real he

Any truth that can exist in one can exist in the other. Because of this, there is no definite way to tell if an experience is dreamt or not. The arguments against this are purely speculative, based on personal experiences, and perhaps experiences of others, but that is not enough. Just because one person may not feel pain during a dream, signifying some sort of differentiation between the two states, does not mean another person doesn’t. Because all the evidence against this argument are purely speculative and circumstantial, it proves that we cannot prove consciousness at any given moment with Cartesian certainty. A waking state does exist, however, our ability to differentiate it from a sleeping state is impossible, leading to confusion about experiences. Having Cartesian certainty about whether or not we are dreaming at any given moment allows us to evaluate all the other aspects that might be skewed our findings. Because we may be asleep at any moment, who is to say our knowledge and experiences aren’t all dreamed? The brain, although a complex mechanism, is not complex to come up with the ideas that we have experienced within them. We may form new ideas based on our experiences, but the basis of it must have been experienced at one point or another. Descartes’ dream arguement that he engages in within the ‘First Meditation’ is very complex and tends to have readers feeling skeptical if they are truly awake and no whats going on in the world around them, or if they are actually just dreaming. His arguementcan be both easy to understand as well as breaking down claims to know certain things going on around the world. Descartes describes how people believing they are awake and not dreaming right now may be shaken and wary. At first glance, it came to my perspective that Descartes is delusional to believe that one might believe that they are dreaming and are not awake. I believe this because when one wakes up in the morning they are awake and no longer dreaming, when they open their eyes they see the world and they begin to once again exsist within the world, therefore to be dreaming is not certain and therefore would not make sense to a regualr person. Descartes highlights in his defense the lack of insight a person has in the condition when dreaming, while not awake. In “First Meditation”, Descartes states:

The Matrix is a 1999 science fiction film written and directed by The Wachowskis, starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. It tells a story of a future in which reality to most humans is actually a computer program called "the Matrix”. In "the Matrix” humans are really sleep while their bodies are fed on my machines. The movie while directed to entertain audiences but also gave us many insights into philosophy. Many scenes in this movie reflect Descartes, and his many writings explaining them in a visual manner. In this paper I will show various examples of philosophy within the scenes and give commentary explaining each scene.
The unconscious has a huge part in shaping human behavior, yet many overlook the idea behind it. This is an idea that maybe these unconscious behaviors can be used to alter the future or the past mistakes or anything in between for that matter. Everyone dreams at some point in their life and what many people don’t realize is that dreams usually develop from past experiences or from actual occurrences and thoughts. This means that if someone happened to see a guy wearing a cowboy hat with a feather in it, in one of their dreams, they most likely saw this person at some point in their life and may not have even realized it. It is impossible to create a new face in a dream. In Inception (2009), Christopher Nolan portrays Dom Cobb as a special operative whose life mirrors a Freudian psychological reality in which his repressed guilt leads to self-destructive behavior.
Rene Descartes decision to shatter the molds of traditional thinking is still talked about today. He is regarded as an influential abstract thinker; and some of his main ideas are still talked about by philosophers all over the world. While he wrote the "Meditations", he secluded himself from the outside world for a length of time, basically tore up his conventional thinking; and tried to come to some conclusion as to what was actually true and existing. In order to show that the sciences rest on firm foundations and that these foundations lay in the mind and not the senses, Descartes must begin by bringing into doubt all the beliefs that come to him by the senses. This is done in the first of six different steps that he named "Meditations" because of the state of mind he was in while he was contemplating all these different ideas. His six meditations are "One:Concerning those things that can be called into doubt", "Two:Concerning the Nature of the Human mind: that it is better known than the Body", "Three: Concerning God, that he exists", "Four: Concerning the True and the False", "Five: Concerning the Essence of Material things, and again concerning God, that he exists" and finally "Six: Concerning the Existence of Material things, and the real distinction between Mind and Body". Although all of these meditations are relevant and necessary to understand the complete work as a whole, the focus of this paper will be the first meditation.
Many believe, “dreams are a series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur in the mind during certain stages of sleep” (Braden, 1). According to Freud, he claims that dreams are a series of events and images that are perceived through the mind during sleep (McLeish, 2). He said, “If you want to learn about an individual you could do so by interpreting their dreams” (McLeish, 5). For instance, Freud thinks a person expresses themselves through their dreams. Unlike Freud, “Jung’s depiction of dreams concentrated on symbolic imagery” (Jacobson, 3). He believed differently. He believes an individual’s dream do not distinguish the true meaning of the individual (Jacobson, 3). In other words, Jung thinks a person can dream about anything, and it will mean nothing (Jacobson, 3). Instead, he believes dreams have many different meanings and that they do not interpret ideas (McLeish, 3). He sees dreams like a series of events. Freud disagrees because he believes it is the individual’s character and self-creating the imaginations (Jacobson, 3). In other words, Freud develops a theory that dreams come from the individual’s thoughts and personality, and Jung develops a theory that dreams are just symbolic imagery and have no true

Descartes and Locke both share similar views in their philosophies. They both provide strong evidence to help show what is most real and the secrets of our reality. Locke provides a stronger point of view than Descartes because the evidence in his philosophy goes so far out of his own understanding. Locke has reached deep in the meaning of reality and complexion that with more research we could unlock to true meaning of our ultimate reality. So in comparison between Descartes and Locke, Locke helps explain how we get knowledge, understanding reality, and what is most real.
“Cogito ego sum” - this is a famous quote from Rene Descartes. This quote means," I think, therefore, I am." His beliefs are considered to be epistemological and he is also considered as the father of modern philosophy. In his letter of meditation, he writes about what he believes to be true and what is not true. He writes about starting a new foundation. This meant that he was going to figure out what is true and what is false.
