Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin both have many similarities and differences with one another. There are few characters that can be compared and contrasted, but two that stood out the most were Mr. Darcy and Heathcliff. In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff shared common life problems with Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. The complicated nature surrounding Heathcliff’s motives again adds an additional degree of ambiguity to his character. This motivation is primarily driven by Catherine’s marriage to Edgar and past rejection of Heathcliff, since he was a servant whom Hindley disapproved of. Prior to storming out of Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff overhears Catherine say, “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now…” (Brontë 87). The obstacles that ultimately prevent Heathcliff from marrying Catherine provide insight into Heathcliff’s desire to bring harm to Edgar and Hindley. The two men play prominent roles in the debacle, Edgar as the new husband and Hindley as the head figure who refused Heathcliff access to Catherine. Following this incident, Catherine says, “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same…” (Brontë 87). Catherine’s sentiment indicates she truly would rather be with Heathcliff, but the actions of others have influenced her monumental decision to marry Edgar. In Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, the characters are quite intricate and engaging. The story takes place in northern England in an isolated, rural area. The main characters of the novel reside in two opposing households: Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights. Wuthering Heights is a story of a dynamic love between two people. This love transcends all boundaries, including that over life and death. The author takes parallelism to great extends. Much of the events that happen in the first half of the story correspond to events in the second half; first generation of characters is comparable to the second generation. Many may argue that the characters are duplicates of each other and that they share many traits. Although Catherine Earnshaw and Cathy Linton are mother and daughter, their personalities and lifestyles are very different. This is a great example where the child is and behaves quite different than her mother.
Love has many forms and can be expressed in many ways. The way a person expresses their love is dependent on their personality. Some people’s love is passionate and fiery, for others it is more reserved. Though a love can be expressed differently, this does not mean the people involved love each other any less. There are countless novels that focus on the love between characters, and each character loves differently. In Jane Eyre, Mr. Rochester and Jane have an impassioned affair, this affair is cut short by Jane’s realization that Mr.Rochester already has ties to another woman. In Pride and Prejudice, it is clear that Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy love each other very deeply, as Mr. Darcy is able to overcome his doubts about Elizabeth’s family, and his own timidity, and marry his true love. Though their romance is more reserved, the love that Elizabeth and Darcy share is no weaker than that of Jane and Mr.Rochester. The way that Bronte and Austen approach the theme of love, and the styles of characterization they use, define what the novels becomes. Though they share a common theme, each novelist approaches the subject differently, by the way they use characterization to create characters that contrastingly react to situations.

Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights is a novel about lives that cross paths and are intertwined with one another. Healthcliff, an orphan, is taken in by Mr. Earnshaw, the owner of Wuthering Heights. Mr. Earnshaw has two children named Catherine and Hindley. Jealousy between Hindley and Healthcliff was always a problem. Catherine loves Healthcliff, but Hindley hates the stranger for stealing his fathers affection away. Catherine meets Edgar Linton, a young gentleman who lives at Thrushcross Grange. Despite being in love with Healthcliff she marries Edgar elevating her social standing. The characters in this novel are commingled in their relationships with Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.
One of the biggest rivalries in the nineteenth century was between the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen. These women wrote some of the most popular novels in their time that often had very common themes. Emily Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights and Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice both deal with the common theme of social standing, especially in relation to marriages. In Wuthering Heights, Catherine's higher class standing than Heathcliff’s status hinders them from being together. In Pride and Prejudice the gender roles are reversed, and it is Darcy who must deal with being with a woman, Elizabeth Bennet, in a lower standing than he and his family is. The problem of conflicting social classes extends throughout the entirety of the two novels as an obstacle that both couples most overcome in order for them to be together. These novels show how these two couples differed in their reactions to each other of being in a different social class, and how this affected their love in the end.

Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights can be considered a Gothic romance or an essay on the human relationship. The reader may regard the novel as a serious study of human problems such as love and hate, or revenge and jealousy. One may even consider the novel Bronte's personal interpretation of the universe. However, when all is said and done, Heathcliff and Catherine are the story. Their powerful presence permeates throughout the novel, as well as their complex personalities. Their climatic feelings towards each other and often selfish behavior often exaggerates or possibly encapsulates certain universal psychological truths humans are too afraid to express. Heathcliff and Catherine's stark backgrounds evolve respectively into dark personalities and mistaken life paths, but in the end their actions determine the course of their own relationships and lives. Their misfortunes, recklessness, willpower, and destructive passion are unable to penetrate the eternal love they share.
Although Mr. Darcy and Miss Bennett have a bantering relationship throughout the movie, which is quite entertaining, they end up falling for each other. On several occasions, snide comments and hurtful remarks show the disapproval they hold for each other. When Mr. Darcy proposed, Elizabeth was completely taken off guard, and reacted harshly in her surprise. As a result of this, Mr. Darcy was tormented because of his pining for Elizabeth. This caused his attitude to go from arrogant and prideful, to humble and affectionate. This change in personality in change and attitude initiated her great love with Mr. Darcy. Another love story portrayed in this movie is between Mr. Bingley and Miss Jane Bennett. The first time they meet, Mr. Bingley is completely smitten. Although Jane (Elizabeth’s sister) keeps her guard up, she does display some kind of growing affection for him. Just as Jane thinks that she is in love with him, Mr. Bingley’s sisters whisk him away to London, hoping to destroy the whole affair. In the midst of the movie, it seems like the relationship is over. But when Mr. Bingley returns to Netherfield, his love for Jane has not ceased. Written by Jane Austen in 1813, Pride and Prejudice reflects the protagonist, Elizabeth Bennett, and her ideal match, Fitzwilliam Darcy, as they struggle to overcome their differences, and obstacles otherwise existing within the accompanying characters (social hierarchy, jealousy, selfishness). Elizabeth’s realization and acceptance of Darcy’s true goodness leads her to overcome her harsh, initial prejudice of him and Darcy’s tempering of his pride throughout the novel allow him to eventually applaud, and love Elizabeth for her strong-character. Comparing and contrasting darcys and Elizabeth are relevant to relationships now. Now just like people now and back then, many people get into relationships for many of the wrong reasons. One reason is for the possibilities of gain from the other person’s money and/or wealth. Darcy realized that her family was money hungry. Today many families have become estranged due to money issues and complications. Darcy has pride in his character or morals and has a prejudice for the Bennet’s and their money.
