Amendment 13, passed January 31, 1865, ratified December 6 1865, brought freedom and citizenship to all slaves. Although the slaves were free, they weren’t equal to the whites, and didn’t have the rights that all of the other white American citizens did. Black Americans moved past slavery, but faced other challenges that held their population back.
