The Europeans first came over in the year 1492 but they did not settle in the America’s then. The first English settlement was in Jamestown, Virginia in the year 1607. When the English came and settled, they were bound to make transformation on the land they have decided to settle in and because their puritan values were not accepted in Europe as they were being persecuted for their religious beliefs. The reason why puritan values were not accepted was because they learnt to question authority instead of following the ruling of the King. Soon after settling down in this new environment, after about 2 centuries, they were making changes. They then expanded west and the Westward expansion took place. After the Louisiana purchase, there was a great number of increase of slaves in America. Africans were shipped over the ocean to auctions where wealthy white landowners would buy slaves. This was the beginning of slavery because when one is working under another, it automatically means that the people giving orders were higher up on the hierarchy and so the Africans were seen as low class people and the wealthy white landowners were seen as higher class. For about 100 years or so, nothing was changing but the Africans soon felt that they were treated very badly and so they started retaliating. From small retaliations like not working to the best of their ability to big retaliations like the Nat Turner’s rebellion. The African Americans were then freed after the 13th amendment and they faced major segregation because no one was used to whites and African Americans being at the same dining area, same schools etc. A few events took place to try to desegregate between the African American and the Whites. As they have their own culture keeping the roots of their ancestors, the people who are not the same race treat them unfairly. For example, the Huffington Post said that they do not have equal chances as a normal American. The average SAT score for Native Americans is 1427 compared to the normal White people who have average SAT scores of 1576 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/). It is also said that Native Americans do not have equal opportunities as everyone else as the public schools they attend near their reservations have less AP courses as a school that White Americans go to. In 2010, a research was done of the percentage of students that attended high school that offers AP level courses. Asians top the list with 97%, second is the Whites and the Hispanics with 91%, African Americans were next on that list with 89%, and Native Americans were at the bottom of that list with only 79%.
