Colonization is when a country goes to another country and claims political control. The government is thinking about colonizing South America because they are having some hardships. In the mid 1800s, Europe colonized Africa and it created many different negative conflicts. The US government would not want this to happen if they were to take over South America. So as a result, South America should not be colonized because multiple people were killed for resisting and countless people were taken for slavery. The US right now, has a good relationship with South America. If the government tries to take over South America, there could be serious consequences. Europeans were getting their “ supply” of slaves from Africa. As stated in the text, “ one million additional slaves were legally taken from the region” ( Things fall apart, 2012, pg 18). South America already has there own problems, The government should not stir the pot. Africans were taken against their will. They were abused in more ways than one. For examples, slave labor took over 5 million lives. (McCormack, 2006). With that in mind, does government want this to mess up their reputation? 5 million lives. That is a great deal of lives lost, and that does not even count the lives lost to disease, resisting, and war. As stated in an article, South America has “ vast mineral wealth and plentiful freshwater. It also has rich fisheries and ports on three bodies of water.” ( National Geographic,para. 2). “ Many crops thrive..” (para. 6). The resources in South America will make America thrive for having more resources. South America will also have a trade agreement with the US that will make them earn more money. As stated in the text, “ The continent’s economy is centered on the export of natural resources” (National Geographic, para. 2). South America is rich in resources that America could gain and would be able to use and sell. Colonizing South America would make the US propire, but can still have many cost and the cost cancel out all the benefits. As noted in a video, when the Europeans colonized Africa it Started civil wars and massacres (McCormack, 2006). When the wars started many people died, and who knows? South America could also try to start a war with the US. They people of Africa did not want to be colonized and it cost them many things in return. Furthermore, In the article Things Fall Apart it points out, “Many people, even in the non-centralized areas, fought colonial control with every means at their disposal” ( Things Fall Apart, 2012, pg.19).
