European colonialism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was unlike European imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Colonialism and imperialism had similarities and differences. Some similarities are that a more powerful country is taking over a less powerful country, and the powerful state uses the land to its advantage. Differences of imperialism and colonialism is that imperialism imposes economic and political control over a state whereas colonialism acquires the land and then settles in it to use the materials for their own benefit, and the colonialists did not care to help the natives of the country they were taking over unlike the imperialists who did care. Imperialism and Colonialism are similar in the way of being more powerful than the countries being taken over. For example, in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, there was a war between France and Spain where France won which caused the decline of the Spanish Empire, making it known that France was more powerful. For instance, during the Scramble for Africa the great powers used the resources that Africa had before they came and annexed it for their benefit. Colonialism and Imperialism are also very different because imperialism imposes economic and political control over different states whereas colonialism acquires the land and then settles in it. For example, in the New World/ Americas, the colonialists tried to take over and settle but the imperialists took over Africa instead. In colonialism, the people did not care as much about the natives of the land they were taking control of so they would kill them but the imperialists wanted to civilize the people first. For instance, in the New World when the colonialists were taking it over, they just took it and killed them.
