Being a college athlete is not an easy thing to balance and the responsibility should not be taken lightly, with that being said, I do believe that athletes should be rewarded for their hard work but I do not think payment is the proper form of reward. The discussion of whether college athletes should be paid or not paid is a topic that is highly disputed amongst the current realm of sport. The idea of college athletes receiving compensation has multiple viewpoints due to various factors that may affect one’s opinion on the controversial topic. College athletes, especially at the Division I level, spend much of their college experience dedicating their time and attention to their sports during the season and during the off season. College athletes are classified as amateur athletes but often times are subject to the vigorous schedules and expectations that professional athletes are held to. Some universities actually profit off of their sports teams (i.e. Ohio State football, Kentucky basketball), meaning that the athletes of these teams are indirectly providing means of revenue to their schools. Some believe that the least the schools can do in return for the athlete’s hard work is to provided them with a monthly stipend with a set amount of money—especially when the athletes are allowing a flow of profit to come into the …show more content…

The NCAA is an association that is composed of amateur athletes that rejects the acceptance of endorsement and sponsorship offers and/ or any other forms of payment that are presented to its college athletes. As being categorized as amateur athletes, the main thing that sets college athletes apart from professionals, is that fact that they do not get paid. NCAA athletes are on a tight rope when it comes to rules and policies that they have to abide by. The moment an NCAA athlete compromises these policies and/or accepts endorsement offers or compensation from agents, not only would the athlete no longer be classified as an amateur athlete but the athlete would lose their NCAA eligibility
