Anton Chigurh does not deal out death at complete random. In fact, he sometimes seems hesitant to kill, especially during his encounters with the gas station owner and Carla Jean. This leads him to offer a coin toss to his potential victims, so that they have a fair chance at surviving. "That's the best I can do," he tells Carla Jean. Chigurh knows that he cannot let her go, but wants her to understand that fact as well. So he uses the coin toss show her that she was destined to die in that moment and that he was destined to be the one to pull to the trigger. He views himself as an instrument of fate, not a grim reaper.
Giovanni & Lusanna-by Gene Brucker In the story Giovanni and Lusanna , written and researched by Gene Brucker, there is a woman who has taken her alleged husband to court, because he has married another woman. The story is a factual account of what transpired during this court case and the remainder of Giovanni¹s life. There are several similarities between their world and ours, but for the most part we live in a totally different environment. Our standards of living have greatly improved, but more than that our society has grown more tolerant toward the people who deviate from everyday standards.
Timothy Brook discusses in his book the aspects of world trade during the 17th century and how through the process of globalization, how regions became as interconnected as we know of today. Most people tend to have this conceptualized idea of what globalization is as well as its process. Throughout my educational career, globalization has always been portrayed as big businesses working together providing different goods and services worldwide. In other words, globalization simply involves big, fortune 500-esque companies and has no involvement from anyone else. In the text, however, Brook gives a different interpretation and does so by examining six different paintings by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. Instead of focusing primarily on the obvious aspects of each painting, Brook draws the readers’ attention to a variety of intricate details and provides insight for all of them. This helps support his belief that globalization can be traced back to the events of the 17th century and had contributions from several individuals.
Can cheating be an excuse for the phrase; survival of the fittest, or is it an epidemic moral corruption? Since the advent of modern competitive sport, winning has always been the bottom line. Honesty, honour and fair play have taken the backseat. The purpose of the essay May The Best Cheater Win, by Harry Bruce, is to inform how cheating has become widespread and accepted in America. Sports are an integral part of American culture and indeed an entire industry exists because of these competitive sports. The result of these competitive sports has led to the moral corruption of most athletes, as they would do anything to win. Harry Bruce discusses the distortion of right and wrong that has penetrated all levels of sports, from children's league to regional division. He confidently informs his reader that organized sports not only "offer benefits to youngsters" but "they also offer a massive program of moral corruption".
People look upon strangers and unknown beasts differently as they regard their own townspeople and domestic pets. Foreigners are the centers of attention and suspicion. The Giraffe by Mauro Senesi showcases the perception of a giraffe by people with different ages after its proprietor mysteriously died. In the story, Rolandino, a stubby boy, is willing to take care of the enormous beast because he is also criticized for his shortness and corpulence. The giraffe is unique in the little Italian town. For this reason, lots of people fear it. Nobody knows something about the giraffe which is devoid of its safe keeper. However, over the course of the story, since the gigantic creature involuntarily eats things someone else wants to preserve, the human race becomes intolerant regarding to the mysterious herbivore animal. Mauro Senesi uses The Giraffe to argue against discrimination caused by egocentrism within our society because of anatomical and behavioural divergences, and this is shown through different reactions of secondary characters and the progression of nature within of society.
The plays trajectory throughout does not disappoint audience members as its quick paced plot continues through each of the vignettes unraveling more of each characters background. According to Joe Belanger of the London Free Press, the fast-paced show “featuring eight vignettes, [shorter than the original play] each carrying a character from the previous scene until the show comes full ‘circle’ to the real life of the bi sexual Ben whom we meet in the first scene where he was hoping to meet ‘Louis’ who turns out to be Lois” leaves the audience appreciating each of the characters for who they are (Belanger). Words… Without them what would life be? They can mean so much when strung together correctly, but can also just be a senseless jumble of nothingness. Children often struggle to overcome the tiresome task of spelling: a seemingly meaningless string of letters. Even after that is accomplished, there are still so many different meanings to words. Words can be interpreted in any way the suits the reader at that moment in time. The word “spirit,” for example, according to Webster’s Dictionary, means the force within a person that is believed to give the body life, energy, and power (Merriam-Webster). In Dante Alighieri’s The Dark Wood of Error, taken from The Divine Comedy, he uses the word spirit in line 25 while describing a dangerous “obstacle” that no one has ever survived. Spirit is a word that has multiple meanings to it, which can change the meaning of this portion of the poem- lines 22 through 27- depending on the way the reader interprets it.
Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” tries to shed light on the conflict between women and a society that assign gender roles using a patriarchal approach. Specifically Margaret Bauer highlights, that most of Chopin’s works revolves around exploring the “dynamic interrelation between women and men, women and patriarchy, even women and women” (146). Similarly, in “The Story of an Hour” Chopin depicts a society that oppresses women mostly through the institution of marriage, as women are expected to remain submissive regardless of whether they derive any happiness. The question of divorce is not welcome, and it is tragic that freedom of women can only be realized through death. According to Bauer, the society depicted in Chopin’s story judged women harshly as it expected women to play their domestic roles without question, while on the other hand men were free to follow their dream and impose their will on their wives (149).
The novel Upside Down, by Eduardo Galeano depicts the injustices and unfairness of several branches of the global society. The differences between the colonized and the colonizer as Galeano writes is always growing and so is the gap between rich and poor. The author challenges western and eurocentric minds as to why on average, countries in the northern hemisphere have a higher standard of living than countries in the southern hemisphere. At first as a reader I thought the writer was whining about the unfairness of the world, but it is the social opiates such as the false idea of capitalism and choice that keeps us in check in this so called democracy. The author forces the reader to open their hearts to a concept that today's capitalist, power hungry society has almost forgotten
For my independent reading book I decided to choose Million Dollar Throw which is written by Mike Lupica. I chose this because it tied in with sports which I have a big interest in. Million dollar throw is about an eighth grader names Nate Brodie. Nate is a quarterback for his school's football team in Valley ,Massachusetts. Nate had to overcome many different obstacles as his dad lost his job and had to apply for a part time job. Meanwhile, his mother has to start working two jobs. Nate grows up a lot during the story because he learns how people manage challenges in their lives. Nate's family is financially challenged when his father loses his job. Nate learns from his father how to keep promises and to overcome obstacles.

Fate has commonly been perceived by humans as an immaterial but also binding “plan.” Fate is, “a power that is believed to control what happens in the future,” and is also commonly regarded as being inescapable (Fate 1). The ancient greeks built up this modern idea of fate. The Moirae in greek mythology were the gods which decided everybodies fate. They were split up into three different gods, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. Clotho spun the thread of life when women were in the ninth month of pregnancy to decide the child’s fate. Lachesis would then measure the thread of life given to each person, and Atropos would cut the thread of life, deciding when each persons life would end. In greek, atropos literally translates to “inevitable.” This is where the idea that fate is given to every human being and already decided even before the human being is born (David and Sharon Hoffman 1).
In Pouliuli, a novel written by Albert Wendt, Faleasa Osovae awakens to find the life he’s been living all along is a mere façade. Pouliuli invites readers into the Samoan community of Malaelua, which is turned topsy-turvy when Faleasa misleads his aiga and community by acting maniacal. Albert Wendt ties a famous Malaelua saga about a mythological hero named Pili to Faleasa Osovae’s life. In the myth as well as in Faleasa’s story, they both had the same goal, which was to live the rest of their life “free”. To accomplish this goal, they both had to accomplish three tasks. Pilis’ tasks were to eat a mountain of fish which the giant’s had caught that day, to race the giants down a river, and make himself disappear. Faleasas’ tasks were to destroy Filemoni, Make Moaula the new leader, and remove Sau and Vaelupa as council leader. Of course they couldn’t have done these tasks alone so both of them enlisted help from friends. Pili enlisted the help of Tausamitele, Lelemalosi, and Pouliuli. Faleasa enlisted the help of his long time friend Laaumatua and his son Moaula. Finally to get the freedom they so wished for they had to complete one last task. In Pili’s case it was to divide his kingdom among his children while Faleasa had to remove Malaga as congress of the village. In the end, they both end up with nothing. Both ending up in the darkness of Pouliuli.

Hester says they don’t have any money, because they don’t have any luck. Sadly, she depends on Paul to find some luck. He doesn’t even realize that a task has been placed on him that he shouldn’t even have as a child. Money can’t buy happiness. Paul’s mother is unhappy and Paul wants to make her happy. He sets out to find luck, which will bring money.
