The fight to continue classical music in this new day in age seems to be futile but is there anywhere in the world where the heart still beats? Do you think classical music will ever become popular again? From the Medieval or Gothic period, around 800-1200, to the modern period, 1910-present, the constant decline in classical music is evident. Even though this type of music was very popular and has traveled through many periods for example, the renaissance, Baroque, and Classical, the major decline began at the beginning of the 20th century. With new instruments becoming involved, and new sounds being developed, this aspect of music seemed to be a distant memory. After moving to Eugene about 9 months ago, my eyes have been opened up to the amount of different genres of music there are. From EDM to Classic Rock, there is abroad scheme of music that is produced, and the Classical genre is not left out. Having many music halls around the city, there is plenty of opportunities for musicians to display their talents. The University of Oregon also plays a large role in the popularity of Classical music. With classes like Music 125 and many others, it highlights the performances being held around the area and even causes students to become more intrigued in the music causing them to go venture out into this musical world be themselves. If I had to grade this city on it’s state of classical music, I would not characterize it as vibrant due to its overshadowing from other genres of music but I would not say it is dead either. Eugene is a very special place where unique things can stay alive and appreciated, and I believe that classical music is one of them. One venue which caught my eye was the Eugene Symphony. Located about 5 minutes from campus, I feel very intrigued in the possibility of seeing a performance. Even the school year is coming to a close, I did my research and there seems to be outdoor summer concerts on July 21st and 23rd which caught my eye. Now transitioning to New York, which is obviously famous for it’s auditoriums, I was personally interested in the American Classical Orchestra. Even though it is a small group who performs in their very small and self-owned auditorium, it made me think of how much these men and women truly care about the music. They are not in it for the money or the fame, but the true bliss that comes to them through their performance. Last but not least in he Classical music capital of the world, Paris, I would love to go see “Mozart: Great Mass in C with Double Choir” which is this week, June 7th. I was very interested in this performance because I would love to see their interpretation of Mozart in this day and age in person. Being located in the main hall of Eglise Saint Louis en l’lle would be a sight to behold and with this performance I promise that it would bring tears to anybody’s
