The brilliant composer Clara Schumann was born as Clara Josephine Wieck on 13 September 1819. Even before her birth, her destiny was to become a famous musician. Her father, Friedrich Wieck, was a piano teacher and music dealer, while her mother, Marianne Wieck, was a soprano and a concert pianist and her family was very musically gifted. Her father, Friedrich, wanted to prove to the world that his teaching methods could produce a famous pianist, so he decided, before Clara’s birth, that she would become that pianist. Clara’s father’s wish came true, as his daughter ended up becoming a child prodigy and one of the most famous female composers of her time.

It was perfectly acceptable for a man to continue making music after he married, but a woman’s job was to dedicate all of her time to her husband and children, not to make music. However, with her husband’s blessing, Clara Schumann decided to continue with her musical career. Clara continued as a concert pianist, but she began composing like her husband. He would have performed as a concert pianist as well, but had gotten his hand injured years earlier and he knew that he would never be able to do it. In 1841, not long after their marriage, Clara had given birth to the first of her eight children. Clara was only twenty-two when Marie was born. That same year, Clara toured and performed in Denmark. Her second daughter Elise was born two years later, when they had moved to Dresden, Germany. That year, Clara and Robert performed in many countries, including Russia. Julie, Emil, and Ludwig were born 1845 to 1848, but Emil died at one year old. In 1850, the Schumanns moved to Dusseldorf, German, where Robert became a director of the Dusseldorf Orchestra. Also, Clara’s daughter Eugenie was born that year. Clara’s last child, Felix, was named after Felix Mendelssohn and was born in 1854. He wanted to show Robert some of his music, but Robert insisted that Clara must hear him. This young man was the brilliant Johannes Brahms. Not long after Brahms met Clara, Robert was fired from his directorship and his depression became more severe, which caused him to attempt suicide by jumping off of a bridge in 1854. However, he was saved and put into an asylum because of the attempt. In 1856, he died of syphilis. Brahms then decided to aid Clara with raising her children.
