Chapter Summary Of Alex Rogo's The Goal

The book starts out with Alex Rogo who is the plant manager. Alex and his boss Mr. Peach have a discussion over the problems of the plant. This confrontation happened because there is an order that hasn’t shipped out on time. Alex must figure out a way to make the plant money or it will be shut down in three months. At a staff meeting, Alex learns just how bad the plant is doing. They have one year to fix things. If they don’t make progress, the company will be shut down. During the meeting, Alex daydreams about a time when he was at an airport and ran into Jonah, a guy with great knowledge of physics. Jonah told him that the one and only goal a plant should have is to be productive. If something they are doing doesn’t contribute to the productivity of the plant, it is a waste. It took a little bit to fully understand these but it made a lot of sense once I figured them out. The flow of products throughout the plant is very important. It doesn’t make sense for one machine to be making products faster than the next one can handle because it’ll all build up and cause problems. Also, the three terms throughput, inventory, and operational expense really help to simplify everything in a plant. Simplicity makes managing a plant easier, allowing the manager to do a better job at what he does. Something as simple as working with the customers is a major part of management. When the plant was having problems with its throughput, instead of changing their whole system to keep things the same for their customers, they asked the customers if they would be alright with having a change in their products from the plant. The customers loved their idea and agreed to go ahead with the change. This shows that sometimes it’s okay to take risks by asking the customers if they’re alright with
