Approximately 30,000 people die because of suicide a year, and 750,000 have attempted suicide. (“Suicide Causes”). There are many reasons people are committing suicide such as drug abuse, low self-esteem, feeling helpless, any type of abuse, etc. People are committing suicide mainly because of bullying, abuse, and stress. Stress can come from a lot of different things, which makes some want to take their own lives. In 2010 there were 33,687 deaths from motor vehicles, and 38,364 from suicide ("Suicide Causes"). Suicide is becoming the “go to” from teenagers and young adults.They are committing, or attempting to commit suicide because they are either being bullied by someone at school, on the internet, at home, or in public. Some teenagers are put under a lot of pressure which could lead to stress.
Bullying is the leading cause of suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of deaths among young people. Bullying results in about 4,400 deaths per year (“Bullying and Suicide”). Bullying someone doesn’t just have to be making fun of the person. There is all different kind of bullying, there is cyber bullying, physical bullying, emotional bullying, etc. 43% of kids have been bullied online that has led to suicide (“11 Facts about Suicide”). So many people are being bullied, but do not want to say anything thing or tell anyone, but they need to get help. Some people do not think what they say to others is hurting or damaging, but to others it can be destroying them and making them feel like suicide will end the hurt that being bullied constantly is causing. Suicide due to bullying has been given the name of bullycide. One example of bullycide would be Jon Carmichael from Texas who was bullied so harshly that “one day they stripped him naked, tied him up, and stuck him in a trash can, and they taped it with their cell phones and put it all on You Tube” per his mother’s account (Texas Monthly, Hollandsworth). A few days later Jon was found hanging by a rafter from their barn after committing suicide. The perpetrators of this abuse were his fellow classmates and it is reported that “60% of boys who bullied others in middle school had at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24; 40% had three or more convictions” (van der Valk, 41). Bullying pushes people to believe that suicide is the only way out. Many teens have chosen suicide over obtaining support or telling someone. Some examples would be Nicole Dagan, Megan Meier, and Sydney Sanders. They all were bullied in different ways, but they all came to the same conclusion. They felt that suicide was the best way to end it all.
Each year, thousands of our children are dying, not from cancer or car accidents, but by their own hands. They make the choice to take their lives. The number of teenagers who take their lives is rapidly increasing each year. Teen suicide has increased four-fold in the last few decades and is now the third leading cause of death among youth 15-25 years of age('Teen Suicide,';NP). In youth 5-14 years of age, suicide is the sixth leading cause of death('TeenSuicide,';NP). Teen suicide is out of control and no one seems to realize just how bad the issue is becoming. Society needs to be more aware of the causes and warning signs that often lead to suicide in young children.
Today, teenage suicide is considered a big issue in America. Many factors contribute to this action whether it is overdosing on alcohol and drugs, cutting ones wrist with a sharp object, or pulling the trigger of a gun to put an end to their existence. Suicide is on the rise due to many factors such as family issues, social issues, and psychological issues. Over 90 percent who take their own life have a documented mental illness with depression being the main one. Untreated suicide is a major cause in suicides because the person is not getting the proper treatment they need to help them. Depression can be caused for a traumatic experience or events that happen in someone’s life. For example, someone who is overweight could get bullied in school for their appearance and it could tear them down mentally and can lead to depression. Over the past few years, suicide rates in teenagers have been dramatically increasing. Suicide is now the third leading cause of death amongst teens and young adults in the United States, right behind motor vehicles accidents and then homicides. Something as horrific as teen suicide should not be the third leading cause of death among teenagers. Suicide is a problem that needs to be addressed and furthermore prevented.

This essay examines the reasons why a person of good physical health decides to terminate their own life. It does not consider euthanasia, assisted or forced suicide. Compared to most aspects of psychological health it is limited in scope for research – no “follow-up” can be performed, if the act is completed, and no ethical panel would approve experiments to demonstrate a causal link. Teen suicide as an extremely complex tragedy, that unfortunately happens all the time throughout the United States. There are friends, parents, and peers that are facing the misfortune of losing a young, close, loved one to suicide. Most people don't realize that adolescent suicide is common. They don't want to believe how often this occurs in the secure environment found in the small towns of America, as well as in its largest cities.
Most everyone at some time in his or her life will experience periods of anxiety, sadness, and despair. These are normal reactions to the pain of loss, rejection, or disappointment. Those with serious mental illnesses, however, often experience much more extreme reactions, reactions that can leave them mired in hopelessness. And when all hope is lost, some feel that suicide is the only solution.
Too many adults seem to think that bullying is just part of being a kid, but it isn’t, and it has a negative and sometimes long lasting effect on others.
